ANOTHER VICTORY. Sampson’s Gunners Do Good Work at Santiago Monday. Washington, June 7.—Meagre de tails have been received of the bom bardment of Santiago de Cuba on last Monday by Rear Admiral Sampson and Commodore Schley. « ' Ten American warships maintained a steady fire on the batteries of Puita Gorda, Socopa, Cine ore al as, Morrow Castle and the Spanish fleet in the harbor. About 1500 projectiles of all sizes and character were fired by the Amer icano which played sad havoc with the Spaniards on land and sea. The Spaniards responded to this fire with vigor but it waa scarcely felt by the Americans and no damage of any consequence was done. The Spanish losses on lind were heavy and at least 50 officers and pri vates were killed and a large number wounded. Morco Castle and the forti fications are masses of ruins, and the Reina Mercedes was struck by a 13- inch shell from the Oregon, which tore all her upper works to shreds. Her second lieutenant and nearly 100 aailore were injured. The vessel was so badly damaged that the men were forced to leave her and seek safety on the ehore. Later in the day dftberican marines were landed at Daiquiri, and an en- gagement took place between the in* Tiding forces and a column of Span ish troops. The Spanish forces was defeated with heavy loss and was driven back towards Santiago, leaving their dead and wounded behind. Heavy gone are now being landed preparatory to moving toward Santiago and laying ssige to the city. The Modem Beauty Thrives on good food and sunshine, with plenty of exercise in the open air.
