It is known thatbatwaen fifteen and
eighteen thoaeaud troops are on board
the transports bound for Santiago,
while tbe others in oamp and ready to
embark will, in all likelihood, be sent
to Porto Rico.
There are two more points to be at
tached, and, if successfully done, tbe
president feels assured that the war
will hastily come tn a conclusion. Tbe
first of these is San Juan and the next
Haven*, ,It is learned at tbe war
department this morning that tbe
army to be lauded near Santiago Will
remain there only so long as to get
the city under perfect military discip
line, when tbe major portion of it will
for Porto Rico Sampson
and Schley have already been given
orders to proceed to San Juan just an
soon as they are assured that the land
batteries on tbe shore have been per
manently silenced, and tbe fleet with
in the harbor either totally disabled
or else completely blockaded by the
Merrimac.
A dispatch from Madrid, giving an
account of the bombardment of Santi
ago de Cuba on fast Monday by the
American fleet aays: !
“The American navy under Admiral
Sampson ba* fiercely attacked Santia

Reina Mercedes.”
It is also stated that the Vizcaya
was "badly damaged.” Tbe dispatch
does not number tbe Spanish dead,
but it is estimated that fully a hun
dred of the land and navy forces were
either killed or fatally wounded.
Throwing High Explosives.
Since the discovery of the high ex*
plosive* tbe military and scientific ex
peris of tbe two continents Lave been
cudgeling their brains to perfect a
shell to throw them, says the New
York Press. An officer of the United
States army has practically completed
a device which will perform this bitb
, erto impossible task.
Pierce is tbe officers' name, and as
L’ there are. only two of this nams in the
regular army, one of whom is post
chaplain at Port Apache, Aris , it is
reasoned that tbe other Pierce is tbe
man.
► He is P. E. Fierce, instructor in
West Point Military Academy, and
second lieutenant of the Second in
fantry.
Every fact connected with tbe in
vention i*hedged about with secrecy.
It is not denied that tbe device is not
far from actual completion. This fact
alone is sufficient to set tbe whole sci
. entific world agog, especially in these
times of war.
It is possible that it is so far ad
vanced that it may be tried on tbe
Spaniards. It ia known that Ibis is
hoped to be done, but so sedulously is
the whole matter guarded that it is
not even known where tbe experi
ments are being conducted or how far
tbef have progressed
Tbe invention is a detonating fuse
for a shell to fire high explosives.
Such a fuse, it is believed, will advance
ten yearn the day which it is predicted
will come when war will no more be
waged because of its very destructive
sees.
The minute an American rifle burls
■ shell of this kind successfully at an
enemy, all other shells will be as anti
quated as rifle* without magasines.
Tbe day that witnesses tbe perfec
tion of such a shell will relegate to a
position of secondary importance bil

The men selected are thoroughly up!
to date in this matter and will require]
but a few days for tbe completion on
their muster sheet*.
There are several noticeable thing*!
going on in camps which causes ths
reporters to believe something i* going!
to transpire soon. Every item through/
out the camp* i* guarded with tb»
utmost secrecy and it is next to im
possible to ascertain anything of in*
tere*l. But judging from lb* large
bill* of goods being ordered and re

of nearly one thousand guns, knap

are preparing
to break camp and leave for some sea

There are few sick enough to be in
tbe hospital and those confined therein
are improving rapidly and will soon
be at their duty again.
The band is now furnishing two
concerts each week in tbe Y. M. C. A.
tent, which are thoroughly enjoyed
by all.
President H. M. Comer, ol the Cen
tral railroad, presented the Chatham
artillery with a barrel of oboiee pickles
which was quite a treat to officers and
men.
All who have been accustomed to
attending the dress parades in the
afternoons at tbe regular state en
campment have greatly missed that
sight since tbe present encampment
began.
However, if they wish to see th*
men all drilling upon tbe parade
ground, they can now do so, as retreat
is sounded every afternoon at 6:30 and
the sight is most interesting. Th*
companies have not all been supplied
with guns, yet many have them, and
the drilling is very pretty.
Important to Mothers-
The manufacturers of Castoria have
been compelled to spend hundreds of
thousands of dollars to familiarize the
public with the signature of Chas. H.
Fletcher. This has been necessitated by
reason of pirates counterfeiting the Casto
ns trade-mark. This counterfeiting is a
crime not only against the proprietors of
Castoria, but against the growing genera
tion. All persons should be careful to see
that Castoria bean the signature of Chas.
H. Fletcher, if they would guard the
health of their children. Parents and
mothers, in particular, ought to carefully
examine the Castoria advertisements
which have been appearing in this paper,
and to remember that the wrapper ol
every bottle of genuine Castoria bears the
sac-simile signature of Chas. H. Fletcher,
under whose supervision it has been man
ufactured continuously for over thirty
years.—Phila. Bulletin.

FIFTH PREPARES TO GO.
Colonel Candler’s Regiment Anxious
to Follow Him to War.
The Fifth Georgia regiment of-mili*
tin ia preparing to go to war.
! .The members of the regiment are
hanxious te go with their regimental
commander, Col. John S. Candler, and
yesterday several important develop*
meets were noted.
While the regiment as a state or
ganization may not be touched, the
'members will certainly respond when
<Jol. Candler asks for volunteers,
i The men who will probably be caps
tains under Col. Candler have already
been offered tbe services of more than
men, who are not only willing
but anxious to follow Col. Candler.
Tbe men will go trader their own offi
cers as nearly as practicable.
Who will be majors in the new reg
iment is the question now uppermost
with tbe ambitious military men. It
is said that tbe two majors will be
Major Bhewmake, of the Sixth regi
ment, of Augusta, and Col. William
Green Obear, aMl*tant\djutant gensr*
tai of Georgia. Col. Usher Thomason,
in the capacity of lieutenant colonel,
will command the other battalion
