THE MORNING CALL.
A
VoL IX. No. 240.
first land battle.
four Americans were killed
and one wounded.
15,000 Troops Left Key West Yester
day Moraine for Santiago and
Win Land Friday.
Washington, June 13—The drat
land battle between the American and
Spanish forces took place Saturday at
the abandoned cable station at the en
trance to the harbor of Guantanamo.
The fighting began at 3 o’clock in
the afternoon and was almost contin
uous until 6 o’oloCk the next morning,
when the Americana were re enforced
by a detachment of marines from the
Marblehead.
The Americans in the engagement
were Lieut. Col. Huntington’s battal
ion of marines which were landed
from the transport Panther last Friday,
while the Spanish forces consisted es
guerillas and Spanish regulars.
Four Americans were killed and one
wounded, and the advance pickets uft
der Lieutenants Neville and Shaw are
unaccounted for: Those killed are:
Assistant Surxeqn John Blair Gibbs,
Sergeant Charles H. Smith, Private
Wi[liam Dunphy and Private McCol
gan. Corporal Glaas was accidentally
wounded in the bead, bat bis injuries
are not serious.
The Spanish loss is not known, but
splashes of blood found at the position
they occupied indicate fatalities. All
who wore killed or wounded were car
ried off by their comrades.
The bodies of Privates McColgan
and Dunphy, when found, bad been
stripped of shoes, hats and cartridge
bolts and were horribly mutilated with
machetes.
The Spanish squads were concealed
in the chaparral cover, while the
Americano were on a ridge and fur
nished fine targets against the sky
and white tents. The Spaniards could
only be located by the flames from
their gone, at which the mariaes fired
volley after volley.
Shortly after midnight the Span
iards made a gallant charge up the
elope, but were repulsed by the terrible,
fire from the marines. At one time
they came so close together that there
was almost a band to hand struggle,
and the officers used their revolvers.
After retreating the Spaniards kept
up a desultory firing until 6 o'clock,
when they withdrew, leaving the
Americans victorious.
It was formally announced at the
war department that the first military
expedition had left Key West at day
light today, bound for Santiago All
day yesterday there was a lively con
ference between the officials of the
navy and war departments and after
an all day session the war board com
pleted its plans for convoying the
troop transports. Major General
Shafter, who commands this expedi
tion, has a force of 773 officers and
14,500 enlisted- mon.
The troops will arrive off Santiago
Thursday morning at the latest, bar
ring storms, and the landing probably
will take place on tbe afternoon of
that day or Friday following, as Ad
miral Sampson io extremely, anxious
to reinforce the small body of marines
now ashore at Guantanamo bay.

GRIFFIN’S NOBLE WOMEN
Will Provide Delicacies for the Sick
at Camp Northern
The government io making provis
ions for the support and maintainaooe
of its army, provides but poorly for
tbo care of the sick outside of tbe sevs
oral hospitals which it has established.
These hospitals are intended mostly
for soldiers who have been wounded or
have diseases which unfit them for
service for any i.reat length of time
Patients in these hospitals have the
best of nursing, and such diet as their
cases require.
Tbe hospitals at the places of mobi
lisation are crude affairs and contain
but tew com’orts for the sick. No pro
vision is made for ice to cool the fever
ed brow and parched lips of the pa
tient, nor for delicacies to tempt tbe
appetite of a convalescent. There is a
prescribed diet and it is issued to both
the robust soldier and the patient lan
guishing ou a cot of fever.
Thia is the condition of affairs at
Camp Nortben, and they have aroused
tbe sympathy of several of Griffin’s
noble hearted women, who are going
to form a relief association and admin
ieter to the want of tbo sick in their
midst
To this end, the Call has been
asked to urge all tbo women and girls
of Griffin who are interested in this
noble and Christ-like work to meet at
the Y. M. C. A. building this morning
at 10 o'clock.
They propose to organise, appoint
different committees, co-operate with
tbo able corps of physicians at tbo
hospital and conduct their work in
such a manner as will bo moot effec
tive in relieving tbe suffering of the
sick. _____
Tbo noble women of Griffin have,
never turned a deaf ear to the cry for
help which came from suffering hu
manity, and they will respond to this
appeal with their usual liberality.
Let all be at the Y. M. C. A. build
ing promptly at 10 olclock this morn

A Miraculous Escape.
Allison Scott bad a moot miraculous
escape instant death while de
livering the Atlanta Journal on Poplar
street last afternoon.
It seems that young Scott was in
tbe act of crossing the street between
Eleventh and Twelftb, when a negro
girl rolling a baby carriage happened
to get too near his horse, which be
came frightened and threw its rider to
tbe ground, with his feet still in tbe
stirrup. The animal continued his
mad rush on tbe sidewalk, dragging
Scott all tbo while.
In front of tbs Boyd residence is a
huge, sharp stone which was missed
by the young man’s hesd by a narrow
margin, and but for bis pressnce of
mind in seizing tbe fence and loosing
his feet from tbe stirrup, he might
have been instantly killed. He will
suffer some little inconvenience from
tbe strain on his tag in pulling from
the horse, but otherwise he pionounces
himself alright.
Tbe horse was caught in front of
Col. Kincaid’s borne on Poplar street

(MUFFIN, SEOMIA, TUESDAY MORNING, JUNE 14, 18S8.
SERGEANT RUBBELL ARRESTED
Placed in Camp Northen Guardhouse
on a Serious Accusation.
Sunday was a busy day in camps
for Battery A, as they received thirty
nine horaea early that morning and all
arrangements had to be made for tbe
caring of these excellent animals.
They are a fine lot of horses, aver
aging 1000 pounds each and 15 hands
high. All are young and spirited. As
there are 140 horses to each company
and two artillery companies in camp,
it will be some days yet before enough
stock can be purchased and shipped.
But when they are all trained and on
tbe march drawing tbe heavy guns
our citisens will ms a sight not Wit
nessed since tbe war between tbe states
Battery B baa been notified that
their berses are being purchased and
will be shipped as early as possible.
This battery was notified several days
ago of the shipment of four guns
which should arrive in a few days.
The bard wind and rain Bunday did
some damags’iu camp Some shelter
tents were blown dewn, while the
floors of others were well watered by
tbe flood of water flowing through tbo
camo. Many of tbo men gathered up
tbeir few belongings and stood with
loaded arms in water several inches
deep which was running over the
floors of thoii tents.
Tbe Y. M. C. A. tent suffered tbo
most as it was blown down on one aide
and its contents well soaked with wa
ter. Tbe strong wind pulled up the
posts around tbe tent and before they
could be replaced and tbe ropes fas
tened to them nearly everything in the
.tent was wet through and through.
But everything was soon put in or
der and yesterday morning they were
dried io the sun.
Tbe First regiment is now well
equipped with guns, knapsacks, hav
ersacks, canteens, and everything ex
cept tbeir army wagons and borms.
Yesterday morning they received
nearly one thousand Springfield rifles
nod other equipments which are nee-’
eesary in actual service. These will
be issued to the companies today and
it will only be a very short while now
before dress parade vsULbt had each
afternoon.
Target practice will soon bo taken
up and each company will have its
day on tbo range learning to use tbeir
weapons. ‘
Sergeant Fred Russa!, Co. M, was
arrested Sunday afternoon and placed
in tbe guard bouse on a very serious
charge.
For some time pest Rusael has been
arresting every man is his company
who was beard utter an oath and
many have suffered the results of bis
tattling. Sunday morujng he became
mad at the commissioned officers of
bis company and used* very indecent
language against them. His cursing
was so vile that some of tbe mon re
ported him to Capt. Drummond who
immediately ordered Russel’s arrest.
He will probably be tried before tbo
courtmartial.
There is some sickness now in camp
but considering the extreme hot, dry
weather, and the fact that the men
have come from every part of tbe state
and from almost every walk of life,
from tbe banker to tho farmer, tho
general health ol tbe camp is really
hotter than could be expected.
Lieut. J. E. McCants, Co. A, has
considerable fever and come anxiety is
felt over bis condition. He has been
brought to tbe city whore every medi
cal attention io being bad and it is
hoped bo may coon recover.
The officer of tbo day yesterday woo
Capt. Timothy O’Brien of Co. C. Tbo
eenior officer of tho guard was Lieut.
Connor of Co. F, while tbo junior of
ficer of tbo guard was Lieut, McCar
thy, Co. L. *
Tbo wells being dug on tbe camp
ground are nearly 40 foot deop and no
water has yet been etruck except a
little spring of no importance in one.
