STARVATION ATS ANTI AGO
AJLMS ABE LANDED IN CUBA
FOR INSURGENTS.
Transport Fleet Off for Cub*,.— Plans
Maturing for the Occupation
of Porto Rico-
Washington, June 15.—-lufortns
lion ba* been received at the war de*
partmeot of the landing of a large
number of arms and an immense
- nuaotity of ammunition upon Cuba.
- The landing was made last Saturday
about 12 miles to the westward of
Santiago, and 5,000 rifles/ 1000 cai
bines, 2,000 machetes and 70,000
pounds of ammunition were placed in
the bands of the insurgents.
At daybreak this morning the last
division of the transport fleet sailed
from Port Tampa, and 26 000 men are
nowateea. It is not thought that
Santiago is the destination of the fleet,
but that the troops will be landed
about 40 miles of Havana, where a
permanent base of supplies will be es
tablished
1 Within the last three days Bear
Admiral Sampson and Commodore
Schley have cut off al! sources of sup
ply and reinforcement for Santiago de
Cuba, and the city is now isolated
from the world and reduced to starva

The First army corps, Major Gener
al John J. Coppinger commanding,
has been definitely designated to urn*
dertake the occupation of Porto Rico.
It will be rapidly increased to a force
of 20 000 men, including all available
regulars now in the south with tbe
addition of tbe best volunteer regi
ments at Tampa, Chickamauga and
Falls Church Va. These selections
will be made in the next day or two
with chief regard to the military qual
ities of the volunteers and the com
parative completeness of their equip
ments.

Laßelle Marie Last Night.
Tbe ' Woodward-Warren Company
presented the above play at the Olym
pic last night to tbe largest bouse of
tbe week end it was considered by all
to be tbe best piece presented by this
most excellent company of artists.
The title role was nerer in better
bands. Miss Ethel Tucker ss Jean
Carlton was ail that could be expected
and afterward as Marie Vallier, “La-
Belle Marie,” won tbe hearts of every
one by her excellent acting. She is
indeed an artist of wonderful foroeJ
Mr. Woodward as Wanpingee kept
tbe bouse io a good humor. He is a
great comedian and a genial gentle
man to meet. Tbe rest of tbe compa
ny was far above tbe average and as
it is seldom our people have the
chance to see such meritorious peri
formances at such a nominal figure
they should show their appreciation
of Manager Paiterson’s efforts in se
curing good attractions and fill the
house the remaining three nights. To
night tbe picturesque comedy ‘ Colo
rado” will be tbe bill. Mr. and Mrs.
Woodward give a great burletque of

I VOLUNTEERS AT CHICKAMAUGA.
Sone St. Louis Privates Come With
Valets. • ...
It must be conceded, therefore, that
the volunteer army now in process of
mobilisation at Chickamauga needs at
least a month of preparation before it
can be ready to sail for Havana or
Porto Rico or Cedis. As lor tbe dis
cipline and respect for authority of
some of these loyal end fervent citisen
soldiers, stories might bo told that
would surpass belief. I observed for a
time the disembarkation of a Missouri
regiment at Lytle’s station, at the
edge of Chickamauga' park. Out tbe
men tumbled, grim and woru by their
journey. Some of the St. Louis pri
vates bad valeU, who groomed sod
brushed them on the station platform-
Excellent ideal It reminded meet tbe
duke of Alva’s march to the Nether
lands, when each of bis 1000 soldiers
"was accompanied by a servant to carry
his arms. Motley does not record
whether the 1000 servants were hired
to do tbe fighting for the 1000 Span
ish soldiers. But there can be no
doubt about these lusty St. Louis vol
unteers. They’ll do their own fighting
aud carry their own arms—as soon as
they are taught bow.
The bearing of a corporal of this
Missouri regiment was most impres
sive. He stood upon tbe step of a car
and shouted to his captain :
“See here, Cap, when in blank will,
you send me those extra men to carry
the extra baggage out of this car?
There are 20 dress suit cases in here
yet.”
They always call them “dress suits”
in St. Louis and Chicago, you know,
and they save time in those cities by
changing clothes in cabs while driving
from office to dinner.
The St. Louis captain looked wor
ried over this crisis of the war. “Keep
your collar cool,” he shouted to the
corporal. “I’ll send tbe men as soon
as I can." _
Probably the corporal had the ad
vantage of bis captain in St. Louis so
ciety. fie shouted back: “Wblf,
blankety blank, I want those men
blankety quick.” And be got the
men io a huiry.
Now, looking at this conversation
seriously, one can see that tbe corpor
al was trying, zealously and honestly,
to serve bis country by saving those
precious dress suit cases before the
empty train was sidetracked. Tbe
captain was imbued with equal patriot
ism and moved by democratic sympa
thy. But no prophecy is needed to
predict that this colloquy will not oe
cur a month hence.
All this is written in no spirit of de
preciation of the volunteers. The large
percentage of their mass that has been
recruited from tbe state militia makes
many of them familiar with at least
the form and spirit of military subor
dination and obedience. They can be
made into the best, the most efficient
military force in tbe world. But that
must take time. Tbe incident I have
just quoted, moreover, must not be ac
cepted as typical. It was extreme,
abnormal, exceptional. Its humor was
wholly unconscious, and it is cited
here as much to indicate the sincere
earnestness of the volunteers,rank and
file, as their undrilled
Chattanooga Letter to New York Mail
and Express.

PREPARING TO MOVE-
The First Regiment Will Leave for
Chickamauga Friday.
Owing to tbe preparstions being
made for the moving of the soldier*
from Oamp Norlbeo to Chickamauga,
the long march was omitted yesterday
morning and the men kept otherwise
busy.
Tbe old guns were returned to th*
quarter master’s department and will
b* turned over to the state when lb*
proper authorities arrive to take
charge of tbe stale’s properly. In the
afternoen new guns which war* r*
•eived several day* ago were issued to
the men. Thia consumed nearly th*
entire day.
It is th* intention of Col. Lawton
to leave Camp Nortben witb his regi
ment Friday night and arrive at
Chickamauga Saturday morning: All
arrangements are being made to this
end and if tbe chief quartermaster
and commissary of th* Department of
th* Golf complete their arrangement*,
Saturday morning will find Camp
Northen deserted, excepting tbe two
light batteries, who will probably be
here another two weeks.
However if these arrsagements can
not be made and the equipment* or*
dered do not arrive in time the troop*
will leave as soon thereafter a* possi
ble. • -
Col. Lawton stated to a Call repor
ter yesterday that if his regimental
wagons and mules were here be would
march hie troops through the country
to Chickamauga Park. This be ceuld
do witb little tax on tbe men as hfs
orders would be to march from 2 :30
to 9a. m , resting all day in tbeir
shelter tents. But they have no wag
ons for hauling their truck and this
ide* will h*ve to be abandoned.
There are io all about 20 patient*
in the hospital suffering with different
diseases. Most of these will be die
charged a* well before Friday and
tboee too sick to make tbe trip will be
sent to Twl McPherson hospital.
Tbe battery companies are receivin<
their traiforms which they ar* badly
in need of, and will leave for Chicka
mauga as soon as every man ie fitted
up in reepectable etyle. They are mak
ing all arrangement* neceaaary for
moving, and will leave at the earliest
possible date.
Several case* of miner importance
have been tried before tbe courtmar
tial thia week snd justice meted out to
the evil doers.
Capt. Blanton Winship was officer
of the day yeaterday, while Lieut. Eat
mand and Lieut. Mell were senior aud
junior officers of the guard.
Bury All Bickerings.
The Democratic primary election*
throughout the state have been held.
The candidate* from Coroner to Gov
ernor have been nominated. The re
sult is known to the people.
If during the campaign for tbe pri
mariee any bickering among demo
crats sprang up let them now be bur
ied, and buried, forever. We be
democrat*, and tbe true democratic
epirit dictates that each and every
democrat should cheerfully abide tbe
final judgment of tbe party.
Some of us may not have gotten, in
the piimariee, tbe candidates of our
choice; but if this be true, it is never
theless our duty, as democrats, to sur
render our choice, and uncomplain
ingly abide tbe judgment of the dem*
ocratic party. Any other course ia
undemocratio and can but work tbe
disintegration of the party.
The question of candidate* having
been settled at the ballet box let all
bickering aoddisappointments, if any,
be put under the <W«r of tbe past;
there to remain ainrlet us all come to
gether as true democrat* desiring tbe
weal and welfare of all the people, and
unite our best effort* for a fair and
honest election of the candidates nom
inated.
We accord every democrat tbe right
to hie personal view* and opinion*,but
when tbe majority of tbe demooratio
party makes up it* verdict and enters
up its judgment upon public question*
and matters, every democrat abould
yield to that judgment.
And to meet opposition from any
source, all democrat* io the state
should rally a* one man to tbeir nom
inees, under the democratic flag, and
carry them in tbe October election te
an overwhelming victory .—Forsyth
