Will Make a Bold Duh for Liberty— Shafter to Bo Reinforced. Washington, June 22.—A special dispatch from Santiago de Cuba tayo that Cubans have brought information tu Admiral Sampson that Admiral Cervera is prepared to make a deeper* ate effort to take his ships cut of San* tiago harbor at the first favorable op portunity. The Spanish warships, it is reported, have boon coaled to their fullest ca pacity and the crews are refused shore leave. Every night vessels drop down the bay to be prepared to embraoj the first favorable opportunity to attempt a dash past the blockading rquadreo. It is said to be the Spanish admiral's hope to save at least a portion of his ships from capture, and in a fight to sink ooms of the American craft. The project to occupy Porto Rico is regarded by the authorities uow as practically removed from immediate consideration, and will be abandoned? until a thorough campaign has been waged in Cuba. The war department has issued or ders to Brigadier General Duffield to proceed with his entire brigade from Camp Alger to Fort Monroe, where they will proceed to Santiago. The brigade consists of about 3,000 men in all. These reinforcements for Gen.Shaft er will be embarked at once and rush ed at the greatest possible speed. The department is determined to take ev ery precaution to wage an active cam paign. He Will Do. A certain wealthy man of this city, says the Detroit Free Press, has set his nephew up in business three times, bnt the young man lacks something essential tu success io the merchan. tile line, and failed with each effort. When he came with the fourth request for financial backing the uncle de murred. "Yon must learn to leap on your self,** be said. "I can't carry you all yonr life. It would be an unkindnees in me to keep supplying you with money to carry on enterprises that in variably end in assignment. I’ll tell you what I*ll do. You owe a good deal as a result of that last failure. Pitch in on your own hook, and gjjt alone until you pay those debts off. Whan you've done that I’ll give you a check for all they amount to. Such an experience would do more good Shan all tbe money I could give you.’* Three months later the nephew walked in'with every claim receipted in full, and tbe uncle was delighted ns he gave him the promised check. "That’s something like it now, and I warrant you feel all the better for hard training How did you manage, Torn!” . * "Borrowed the money, uncle.” Now the old gentleman is telling about that there is tbe making of a great financier in hie nephew. A Destructive Cyclone. News reached this city yeaterday of a destructive cyclone which passed over Coneord late Tuesday afternoon, demolishing houses and uprooting trees. I Lightning struck tbe negro Metho* diet church and it was burned to \be ground. The Odd Fellows building which was located within a short dis tance of the church, was badly dam* aged by the fire. The terrible rain and wind was act companied by hail, which completely stripped orchards of all their fruit and played sad havoc with corn and cot ton. No one was reported as having been ’injured, which is remarkable consid ering tbe severity of the storm. Btatb of Ohio, City of Toledo, ) _ Lucas County, J Frank J. Washington, June 22—According to a report from Rear Admiral Samp son, the general landing of General BLafter** troops on the coast of Cuba will be necessarily delated for several days. Whenever the landing takes place bitter work is ahead for General Shaft er’s men before ihe Special) flag comes down from Morro’s walla The Spanish infantry, cavalry and: guer rilla forces, estimated by, Admiral Sampson number from 30,000 to 45/XX) moo, are stretched from Gusvtanamq m Cabanas, a distance of fifty miler, reedy to concentrate at the point of attank. ‘ / But starving end harassed from the -inland by the Insurgents, the situation of the Spaniards is desperate, smd na val officers familiar with the situation fully expect terrific fighting about Santiago. ’ Army bfficeuon the transports have some anxiety as to how the men will aland tbe strain if they are forced to fight immediately upon landing, after the inactivity at Tampa and the wearying voyage There is no fear, however, for tbe final result, as they will be given valuable assistance by tbe guns of the fleet. Spinsters Because Heroines. "The consciousness of seeing her own charms reflected in a man’s eyes is something which appeals to every women,” writes Edward W, Bok of "They Who Never Were Bride” in 11 e June Ladies* Home Journal. "Nothing else ever makes her so proud and so happy in exactly Jhe same way But that consciousness is not always for expressiot: sometimes it is a thing for one’s inner self, to be enjoyed at the time and to be lived over in the years to come. No; wo men do not wilfully turn away from their own happiness. But they do sometimes darken their own lives to make brighter the lives of others who may be close or dependent upon them. Some higher and fundamental duty sometimes calls, loftier motives quiet tbe deepest heart-longings,a God given task sometimes points a woman in the opposite direction to her own instincts. Tbsre is such a thing—not known to tbe young, albeit years bring the knowledge— as a woman turning away from great happiness to insure the great comfort and happiness of others, choosing their comfort as her life work. Men do it now and then. But women oftener do it. Memories take tbe plnce of realities, and in those memories, sweet and tender, many women are living today. They have never been brides. But they might have been. At one time in their lives the necessity of choice came to them. Prayfully and tearfully, and yet reso lutely, they made the choice. Today they are not wives simply because they are heroines And who will say which is the greater?” The Real Danger. Gladstone had tbe eye of a seer and with almost supernatural foresight could mark the conditions of the fu ture. In an interview, but recently pub iishedrlu discussing tbe future of America, be said: am not so much afra>d either of democracy or of science as of the love of money. This seems to me a grow ing evil. Also, there is a danger from tbe growth of that dreadful military spirit.” Today the greatest danger that threatens American liberties is that of tbe mony power. That power has its hands upon the government at Wash ington, and is manipulating tbe war to suit its own aims and ends. Were that baleful influence withdrawn to day tbe war would not last ‘a month longer.—Rome Tribune. How to Look Good.
