SCHLEY THE HERO It Was Under His Command the Spaniards Met Defeat. Washington, July 6.—Representative Berry, of Kentucky, a member ofthe house committee on foreign affairs, yesterday introduced the following joint resolution: “Joint resolution tendering the thanks of congress to Commodore Schley, United States navy, and the officers and men un der his command. . “Resolved, That the thanks ot congress and of the American people are hereby tendered Commodore Schley, U. S. N..and the officers and men under his command for their heroic and distinguished conduct m destroying the Spanish fleet in Cuban waters on the 3rd of July last’’ The resolution was referred to the naval affairs committee. Mr. Berry in speaking of the resolution said: "I propose that the officer to whom the glory is due shall be recognized. Schley is the real hero of the incident. He and the brave band and officers and men under his immediate direction are the ones who achieved the victory and all honor should be given them. “Sampson commands the fleet in those waters, but it was Commodore Schley in command when Cervera and his fleet made their plucky attempt to escape, and it was under Schley that every one of that Span ish fleet met its destruction. “Schley and his men have performed a notable feat that will go down in history band in hand with that daring forcing of Manila harbor by Dewey on May Ist. Congress should be prompt in recognizing their services, and there should be no de lay in tendering its thanks and those of the country to the real hero of Santiago ” Catarrh Cannot be Cured By LOCAL APPLICATIONS, as they cannot reach the seat of the disease. Halifax, N. 8 , July 6—The Brit ish ship Cromartyshire was towed in hero this morning by the Allan liner Grecian, with her bow torn away by a collision, 60 miles south of Sable is land, with the French steamer La Bourgogne, which latter vessel went down 10 minutes later. Os the passengers and crew on board the Bourgogne, only 200 were saved. Mrs. Lacasse, wife of A. D. Lacasse, language'teacher of Plainville, N. J., was the ojjly woman saved The captain and other deck officers went dewn with the ship. The Cromartyshire laid to and pick ed up the 200 passengers and seamen who were rescued, transporting them to the Grecian, which came along shortly afterward. There were on board the La Bour gogne 191 first class cabin passengers, 125 second cabin, and 295 third-class (or steerage), making a total of 611 passengers, in addition to which there were 220 in crew, making a grand to tal of 831 souls ou board. Fiendish and Barbarous- The action of the Spanish troops in firing on our wounded as they were being carried from the field of battle at Santiago, will bring upon them the censure and condemnation of the. en tire civilized world, which has long since tabooed such barbarous methods of warfare. Reliable reports state that the Spaniards not only did this, but (hat they also singled out and fired upon the surgeons wearing Red Cross, badges. Men bearing litters contain ing our wounded were alsaoboioe tar gets for the Spaniards, whose Mouser bullets have been shown to be put up in metal casings, the purpose of which is to poison the wounded, bringing death after pethaps months of suffer dug. It is bard to conceive how men who apparently fougbt bravely could be guilty of such fiendish acts of bar barism and cruelty. The fact that the Mauser buileta have metal casings shows deliberate preparation on the part of the Span iards. In the excitement and frenzy of battle, maddened troops might fire upon onr wounded, but in view of the disclosure in reference to the poisoned bullets, it is not unfair to assume that Spanish troops obeyed orders from their superiors, doubtless in pursuance of a policy agreed upon by Blanco and bis advisors, when they took deliberate aim and fired at our wounded, the litter bearers and surgeons attending the dead and dying. No wonder American troops on the battlefield thought such diabolical acts called for reprisals. Such acts are killing the last vestige of American sympathy for Spain and Spaniards. Surely the measure of* punishment meted out to them ip the end will be heaped to overflowing —Columbus Enquirer. The Sure La Grippe Care. ' HE WAS WELL MADE UP. / n» Cause ar • Wonderful Hit Mode Ey the Late BUI Nye. James Whitcfltnb Riley tells a quaint story of his former lecturing partner, Bill Nye. It was the opening of their joint season. They had both been rusti cating during the vacation and wore brown as berries. Nye looked much like 2 Othello in his sunburned make up, d Riley suggested to him the applica tion of some “liquid white, ” a cosmetic much affected by. the gentler sex of the profession. Nye sent for the preparation, end never having used anything of tbe kind before he filled the palm of his hand with it and carefully smeared it over his countenance. There was no mirror in his primitive dressing boom, and Riley was beautifying himself on the other side of the stage. The “liqtdd wMte’ ’ dries out some what Uke whitewash, and when Mye appeared before the audience hewas a sight to behold. His head looked like » trotted top piece on a wedding cake. His face, white as the driven snow, was expressionless and blank. The audisnse shrieked, end when he came off from his first selection they denianded hta reappearance. HO obliged them to howls of laughter. Again he made Meekit, and again was redemanded by the up roarious audience. ’Believing ho had made a hit, he wm about to return to the stage when he was caught by the arm by Mrs. Nye, who cried, “William Edgar Nye, what have yon got on your face!” “Nothing but its usual expression, my dear. ” “Expression I Fiddlesticks I You’re a fright,” cried hta wife, and leading him to where thesp was a piece of broken looking glass showed Mm how he w ■** sight of RMsy, jnrt areot going oofß stage, he would have undoubtedly fal lowed him on and been menged bni for the intervention of Mrs. Nye. His head was scraped, ortnbed and washed, and Ms next selection was read without “a hand” from the audience.
