Philip's Men Offer Thanks to God. The closing scenes of the great sea fight between the Spanish and Ameri can warships was moat impressive. The fleet Spaniard, the Cristobal Colon, led the Americans a 'merry chase, but sbe bad no chance. The Brooklyn gradually forged ahead, so that the escape of the Cristobal Colon was cut off. The Oregon waa abeam of the Colon then, and the gallant Don gave it up. At 1:15 be beaded for the shore, and five minutes later down camo the Spanish flag. None of our ships were then within a mile of her, but her es cape was cut off. The Texas, Oregon and Brooklyn elosed in on her and stopped their engines a few hundred yards away. Commodore Schley left the Brook lyn io a small boat and went aboard the Cristobal Colon and received the surrender. Meantime the New York, with Admiral Sampson on board, and the Vixen were coming upon the run. Commodore Schley signalled to Admi ral Sampson: “We have won a great victory, de tails will be communicated.” The victory certainly was Commo dore Schley’s. Then for an hour after the surrender in that little cove under the high hills jqas a general Fourth of July celebration, though a little pre* mature. Our ships cheered one anoth er, the captains indulgsd in. compli ments through the megaphones, and the Oregon got out its band, and the strains of the Star-Spangled Banner echoed over the lines of Spaniards drawn op on the deck el the last of the Spanish fleet, and up over the lofty green-tipped bills of the Cuban moun tains. Commodore Schley, coming along side the Toxas from the Cristobal Colon in his gig, called out cheerfully, ’• 1 ' ■ 11 - .t —r- * ■ 50 SEWING MACHINES GIVEN AWAY! _— —. .... . it’s fniiv ANDiAindl below Read about it We are determined to move out more goods in the next thirty days than « the past history ot this business. Our volunteer troops who are to be sent to Cuba will be at a disadvantage in a battle with the Spaniards, ob serves the New Orleans States, because they will be armed with the old Springfield rifles. This gun does its work when the bullet reaches its mark, but unfortunately, the range of it is comparatively abort. The Maueer rifle, with which the Spanish troops are armed, has a range of 1,800 yards or more. The Springfield is not good for much beyond 1,000 yards. It seems like suicide to send men into battle when they most be under fire for a distaaee of 800 ek 1,000 yards before they can reply, but that is what we are doing with the volunteers on tbe way to Manila and with moat of the army intended for Cuba.
