BOMBARDING SANTIAGO.
THE HAIN OF SHELLS BEGAN
YESTERDAY AT DAYBREAK.
Bobby Shell* the City Sunday -Two
Americana Killed and 4 Wound
ed.—The City Will Soon Fall.
Washington, Joly 11—Tbs shelling
of Santiago has begun. Word has been
received by the cable officers that it
began at daybreak. It is light, but
continuous.
The fear is expressed among officials
here that during the armistice a ma
jority of the Spanish soldiers eseaped
after looting the bouses of the ref
ugees. It is feared that Shafter per*
milted the parleying to last too long,
thus affording an opportunity for es
cape with arms and provisions.
The war and navy departments arc
filled today with those anxious to
laaru the details of the fighting. Gens.
Alger and Corbin are trying to allay
excitement by giving assurances that
tbs general attack will pot be ordered
until tomorrow, when Shafter will
have been reinforced by Miles and
fully 4,000 troops.
By preconcerted arrangements with
the army, the ships of the navy threw
shells into Santiago Bunday afternoon
while the land artillery shelled the
Spanish entrenchments.
The firing was at long intervals and
was kept up until the Brooklyn bad
planted 15 6-inch shells and the Texas
712-inch and 3 6 inch shells. Tbs
Indiaca sent a number of 8-inoh shells
over a steep hill and into the enemy's
lines.
The fire lasted one hour,
It was impossible to estimate th* rt«
suite, as a view could not be bad over
the first bill.
The war department has posted the
following diepatcb from Qen. Shafter:
Headquarters, Near Santiago, Joly
11, via Flays del Eate.-«-Adjatant
General, Washington : The following
report of tbe casualties in the first di
vision yesterday afternoon is just re
ceived :
killed:
Captain Charles W. Bussell, Second
Infantry.
Private Peter Nelson, company A,
Second Infantry.
WOVNPKD:
Lieutenant N. J. Lutj, Second In
fantry.
Private Charles Jenks, company A,
Second Infantry.
Private Charles Lectki, company B,
Second Infantry.
Private Nelson Gilbert, Jr., Twenty
first Infantry.
A dispatch to tbe New Ybtk Tribune
from Siboney, via Port Antonia, says:
Tbe light artillery that arrived on
Saturday will be sent forward and
placed in position lor enfilading the
trenches where the Spanish forces are
strongly intrenched. Tbe progress in
pushing forward tbe heavy siege guns
is disappointing. They may be need
ed to reduce the mate fortifications of
Santiago.
Engineer and artillery officers are
positive .bat they have located accu
rately the Spanish batteries, which
were so destructive in tbe earlier fight
ing. Tbe troops which came yester
day will be need as a reserve and not
sent ahead too rapidly. Tbe addition
to the supplies brought by tbe trans
port will be very serviceable.

THE FOUR IB CH NAVY GUN.
A Most Popular Weapon for of fen
rive and SefoMivo Purposes.
The main batteries of all tbe gun
boats in the navy are made up to 4-
iach rapid-fire rifle*, which are alto
gether the most popular Weapons in
tbe service for offensive and defensive
purposes orr the lighter vessels
The Ceidae, the Helena, the Ma
chais, tie Nashville and the Wilming
ton are each equipped with eight of
these gun^-while the Annapolis, the
Mariotte, the Newport, the Princeton.
and the Wheeling each
mount six of them. The Bancroft re
lies upon four, and the Dolphin upon
two as their chief fighting powers.
Even the fermidsrable lowa has six of
them upon bar superstructure to deter
the approach of torpedo -boats, and tbe
armored cruiser New York mounts
twelve ip her secondary battery. The
two fastest nasals in the navy, tbe
Columbia and the Minneapolis, have
eight apiece, and the double-turret
monitor Puritan is provided with six
to support her four 12 ipch monsters.
The chief advantage of these guns lies
in their extreme rapidity of fire and
ease of manipulation, while their pen
etrating power at all ranges enables
their projectiles easily to pierce all
unarmored cruisers and lightly protec
ted gun positions. '
This gun of four inches caliber
weighs, without its mount, one and
one-hsdf tons, or exactly 3,400 pounds.
Its length is 13.7 feet, and its greatsst
outside diameter is 13 inches, its total
length of bore being 157.5 inches, and
tbe length of rifle bore 128 12 “inches.
Tbe twist of its rifling begins at zero
and increases to lin 25, there being
thirty grooves. It fires a 33 pound
shell with fourteen pounds of smoke
less powder, which develops a muzzle
velocity of 2,000 feet a second, and a
muzzle energy of 915 foot tons.
Bucb a shot will perforate a 7-inch
plate near the muzzle, and will go
clear through a 5 inch plate at 1,500
yards’ distance. Ordinary crews on
all tbe gunboats get a rapidity of fire
of aix a minute out of these 4 inch
rifles, four men handling the ammu
nition, while two sight the piece and
fire it. This speed enables a 4 inch
gun to throw as much weight in a
given time as the 5 inch rifle, which la
practically twice tbe size, tbe latter
weighing three tons and firing under
the beat conditions four 50-pound
shells in a minute. The boat penetra
tion of tbe 5-inoh rifle is barely an
inch more than that of tbe 4-inch at
all ranges, but in ten minutes the
4-inch gun will throw 60 well aimed
shots, while the 5-incb cannot be re
lied upon to threw more than 30.

Wounded Soldier*.
About 200 wounded soldiers passed
through this city yesterday enroute
for the hospital at Fort McPherson.
Most of them wers wounded in tbe
battle of El Caney and showed that
they bad been in the thickest of the
fight.
They were wounded moatly iq tbe
arms and bead, which was explained
by tbe fact that they were lying down
while firing.
It was a grim reminder that our
country was engaged in war, and one
of the poor fellows, with bis head al*
moot completely enveloped in bandages
said Gen. Sheridan spoke the truth
when he said “war is bell.*’
A large number who were wounded
around Santiago and were unable tq
be carried to Fort McPherson, were
left at Tampa, whero they will receive
medical attention.

GRIFFIN, GEORGIA, TUESDAY MORNING, JULY 12, 1888
A WALLED TOWN-
An Interesting Description of Baa
Juan, Puerto Rico.
Ban Juan, Puerto Rico, where the
American forces will soon be, is a per
fect specimen of a walled town, with
portcullis, moat, gates and battle
ments. Built over 250 years ago, it to.
still in good condition and repair.
The walla are picturesque and rep
resent a stupendous work and coal in
themselves. Inside the walla the city
is laid Qff in regular squares, six paral
lel strkois rauntag in the direction of
the length of the island and seven at
right angles Tbe houses are cUsely
and compactly built of brick, usually
of two atorias, stuccoed fin the outside
and painted in a variety of colot#.
"The upper floors are occupied by the
more respectable people, while tbe
ground floor#, almost without excep
tion, -are given up to negroes and
poorer classes, who crowd one upon
another in th* meet appalling manner.
The population within tbe walls is es
timated at 20,000, and moat of it lives
on the ground floor. In one small
room, with a flimsy -psriUion, a whole
family will reside.
The ground floors of the whole town
reek with filth and conditions ate
most unsanitary. In a tropical coun
try, where disease prevails, the conse
quence of such herding may be easily
inferred. <:’<
There is no running water in tbe
town. Tbe entire population depends
on rain water caught onthe flat roofs
of buildings and conducted to a cistern
which occupies tbe greater part of the
courtyard that is an essential part of
Spanish bouses the world over, but
that here, on account of the crowded
conditions, la small. There are no
sewers except for surface water and
sinks, while vaults are in every house
and occupy whatever remaining space
there may be in tbe patios not taken
up by the cisterns. Tbe risk of con
taminating the water is great and in
dry seasons the supply is entirely ex
hausted. * ’ .■
Epidemics are frequent, and tbe
town is alive with vermin, mosquitos
and dogs.
Tbe streets are wider than in the
older part of Havana an£ will admit
two carriages abreast. The sidewalks
are narrow and in places will accom
date only one person. The pavements
are of a composition manufactured in
England from slag,*pleasant and oven
durable when no heavy strain is
brought to boar upon them, but easily
broken and unfit for heavy traffic.
The streets are swept once a day by
hand, and, strange to say, ares kept
elean. From its topographical situa
tion the town should ba healthy, but
it is not. Tbe soil under tbe city is
clay mixed with lime, so bard as to ba
almost like rock. It is consequently
impervious to water and furnishes a
good natural drainage. Tbe trade
wind blows strong and fresh, and
through ths harbor runs a stream of
sea water of not lees than three miles
an hour. With these conditions no
contsgious disease, if properly taken
care of, could exist; without them the
place would be a veritable plague spot.
T.B. Rice, a prominent druggist ot
G-a., writes as follow*: “I
have handled Dr. Pitts’ Carminative for
eight years, and have never known of a
single instance where it foiled to give per
fect satisfaction. Parties who once use it
always make permanent customers. We
sell more of this article than all the other
Carminatives, soothing syrups and colic
drops combined. 1 ’ For teething children
it has no equal.
A Delightful Evening.
The social evening which was post
poned from last Thursday will be given
at the Y. M. C. A. on next Thursday
night. Those Who have promised to
contribute are requested to send con
tributions to th* building Thursday
afternoon and evening or if not con
venient for some to do so it is asked
that they notify Mr. Ragland, who
will send for same.
The ladies are making extensive
preparations and it is believed there
will be a large crowd as the price for
entertainment and refreshments is
only 10 cents.
