Awful Rain of Shells. Some idea of the awful rain ot shells poured into the doomed Spanish squad ron on the morning of July 3, by the pursuing American warships, may be gained from the number of shots fired from the battleship Oregon This number also bears out the statement of the Spanish officers that it was the fire the second bat* teriee that drove their men from the guns and forced the ships to beacb. From the lime when Private O’Shay of the battleehip Oregon fired the first ebot from her forward 6 pounder until the Cristobal Colon turned toward the shore, the Oregon fired 1,776 shells. Os these 1,670 were from her 6-ponnd ere. The big 13 inch guns were fired tbirtyofonr limes, the 8-inch guns twenty-eight times and the 6-incb twenty-four times. The 1-pounder was fired twenty times. The destruction caused by some of the shots were fearful. One 8-inoh shell, which penetiated the turret es the Almirante Oquendo, exploded and kil’ed every person inside, blowing come to pieces.
