The number io placed al 600 under treatment in the hospital and at their quarters. The Utica Daily Press observes that it would be entirely proper to class American war vessels in aoy list d noted health resorts, as no other place can boast such low death rates. Ignorance is the great drawback of the Spanish people. II Blanco’s sol» diere only know that the sailors cap tured from Oervera’s vessels are now living at Portemontb on roast beef and fresh vegetables a general surrender would be the result. A red sunset indicates a fine day to follow, because the air, when dry, re fracts more red or boat-making rays, and as dry air is not perfectly trans parent, they are again reflected in the horizon. A coppery or yellowy sun set generally foretells rain. To show what a terrible condition of affairs exists in Spain, Toral says why he wanted his men to retain their arms is that the returning soldiers may have to defend themselves from mobs of tbelr borne folks. Cervera admit* that be fears for bis life when ho returns to bis native land. Andrew Ferguson, who lives at Oil mob, Ind., is 106 years old, having been born in county Tyrone, Ireland, io 1793. He saye bis motto is, "Eat, drink and be merry while you can.” Mrs. Ferguson, who is forty years bis junior, has born him thirteen children. Ho was sixty when be married. Thue aingelb the editor of the Doug laa Breese: "From tailors bills, doctors* pills—deliver us. »From want of gold t wives that scold, maidens old and widows bold—deliver us. From seedy coats, protested notes, billy goats and sinking boats—deliver us. From mod est girls with waving curls and teeth like pearls—deliv—no, never mind.” Evon now it is open to Spain to re trieve her position without loss of honor; her resources are unequal to the recovery of her authority over the revolted islands. American interven tion has not created the situation, it has only demonstrated it. After all, Spain is simply called upon to sub mit to such humiliation as Great Bri tain accepted when she recognised the independence of the American oolo« nice -London Telegraph. The Washington Poet is in favor also of sending Oervera and all his sei lore home. It is cheaper to ship them to Spain than to feed them. Rev. John Edwards, Methodist pastor at Annapolist, io his Bunday sermon, \ inveighed heavily against the idea es giving them luxuries and treating them as heroes. Others believe that every courtesy should be shown them * and every luxury afforded. Ae we are sure to have a controversy as to - bow to treat the prisoners it may be the wisest lq do 4o send them back to Spain. A New York Herald corresponded thus relates the “one unplesiant inci dent” ol tbe raising of the American flag over Santiago de Cuba: “When tbe time came to raise the flag Scoval (Sylvester Scoval, a correspondent ol tbe New York World) attempted to make bis way to the roof of the palace, wjtb tbe intention of participating in some way in the ceremony. He was ordered down by the guard. Immedi ately alter the ceremony Scoval push ed bis way to Gen Shafter and slapped tbe genera!’* face. He was promptly arrested.” Sooval is one of the atari of yellow journalism. He has been in unpleasant notoriety ever since the first friction between this country and Spain. He has intruded hinfself and his newspaper upon every possible occasion. He has acted upon the principle tbal the war, and the event* leading up to it, were gotten up ex* pressly lor the purpose of advertising Scoval, Pulitzer and the World. He baa been a nuisance to the officials of tbe government and a bore to tbe reading public.
