There are tsn in tbe family and tbe smallest ia a girl 0 feet 3 inches. This Amazon ia a dwarf by the aide of her brolhera, one of whom stands 7 feel 8 incbea in hie stockings. If we could only get up a regiment like thia giant, even the dreadful Weyler would favor hi at oning the negotlons for peace. The Alabama volunteer ion genuine hustler. Private Cornell, of tbe First Alabama, overstayed bis leave of ab sence and was courtmartialed. The trial developed that within a period of twenty-four hours he bad got married, joined the church and collected 317.70 of email debts. WHHBBHSSSeSHSHg Four hundred years ago Spain sent her adventurers to tbe new world to discover unknown territory and win their oonntry new glory. She has been doing exactly thqeame thing for the last few months, and her present discoveries are likely to be quite as useful to the rest of Europe as were those of the fifteenth century. Four or five European nations have been wondering for some time whether it would be safe to challenge us to fight* They know now.— Washington Times. A now method of preserving wood from decay, known as the Haskin pro cess, is being tried on a large scale in England. Instead of withdrawing the sap and injecting creosote or some other antiseptic substance, as is us ually done, Mr. Haskin submits the wood to superheated air, under a pressor* of fourteen atmospheres. By this process, it is averred, the sap is chemically changed into a powerful antiseptic mixture, which, by consoli dating with the fiber, strengthens as well as preserves the wood. The Cuban idea is that Uncle Sam is to pay all the bills and do alj the fighting, and let the Cuban army loot at will and the Cuban junta fill all tbe offices. Nothing more typically Span ish than this Cuban conduct and talk could be imagined. It is quite as Spanish as if it bad been all in Spain, and tbe actors native and to the man ner born. The Cabans do honor to their forbears. The descendant is true to tbe traditionary character of bis ancestors The Philippine Question- *Q>e control of the Philippine* as a dependency to be ruled from Wash' ington is so foreign to the general epirit and object of our Union that it ie likely to exercise a moat deleterious influence upon our politics; and it has not been shown that their possession woold be likely to cast any considera ble benefit of any kind upon the peo ple of this country. We are not under such obligations to the hordes of Agui naldo, or to the other inhabitants of the islands, aa to call for a contin uance of the war with Spain, and the danger of embroilment with other Eu ropean powers, and the assumption of a permanent burden io the shape of the governing of them. A proposition to Spain can be devised, we believe, which shall plainly indicate that we do not propose asking, in the final terms of peace, for possession of the Philippine Weeds, but that we do in* tend to insist upon effective guaran tees of humanity and improvement Then, if fipain rejects our overtures, it will be time to think of assuming the task of taking the Philippines and shouldering the responsibility of Keep ing the* in order after we have got them.—Baltimore News. The official records show that Pri vate Hurveg Atkins, of the Second Massachusetts Regiment, al Santiago, died from nostalgia. Private Atkins* case is tbe first of this sickness that has proved fatsl during the present war, so far as the authorities know. Tbe doctors say that nostalgia, or homesickness, Is more fatal than yel low fever, when one has a well devel oped case of it. For tbe fever there are remedies which may prove rff tk tive, while for tbe homesickness rhe only renpedy is to send tbe soffrrer home, which ia often not possible in tbe army When a sufferer from nos talgia has s confirmed case, and it i« not possible to send him home, all that ean be done ia to make death as easy as possible It is said that the noma ber of deaths during tbe civil war from this disease was very large, com paratively speaking.
