Ships With Capacity Os 12,000 Men
Ord6rod to Bontißiro.
Wash i jtgtox, August 6—The war
department has ordered the Urge
fleet of transports at Pooce to proceed
to Santiago, there to join with the
transports already at Santiago in
bringing Geueral Shafter’s army back
to thia country. There are ten large
transports in the fleet at Ponce, some
of them, like the Mobile, having a
capacity of 1,000 men. In all they
have a capacity of 6,540 men. This
with the capacity of the ships already
at Santiago will give a carrying
strength of over 12,100 men io a trip
In addition to the transports an
non need by Che war department yes
terday as being now at Santiago, it
now appears that the Orizaba, capacity
650 men, is also available. The Yale
will also be brought into service io the
course of a week or ten days. At pres
ent she is to be utilised io taking Gen
eral Fred Grant’s brigade to Porto
Rico, after which she will return by
way of Santiago and take on a load of
Shafter’s men.
With the arrival of Shafter’s army
in this country, every facility will be
given to the troops to recuperate. This
will not only apply to the sick, but to
the well, as it is appreciated that the
hardships through which the men
have gone must have taxed the vitali
ty even of the strongest.
There will be no yellow fever cases
brought to this country, as such cases
can be best handled witbout removal.
The less serious cases of sickness .not
involving contagion will be brought
here if the patients are convalescing
to a point where removal will be ad
vantageous. Surgeon General Stern
berg has in view Several points for pa
tients'and convalescents. The actual
hospital will probably be located at
Montaak Point, where a field hospital
for 500 patients is being prepared, in
addition to the hospital equipments
which General Shafter’s forces will
bring along with them. But in addi
tion to this, General Sternberg has in
view two fine locations, where the
bracing mountains and lake air will
help convalescents to recovery.
These points are Fort Ethan Allen,
Vermont, and Tadmy post, at Platte
berg, N. Y. General Sternberg has
no purpose* of making these points
hospital camps in the ordinary sense
of the word, where severe cases will be
bandied, but only to make .hetk avail
able for the convalescents already well
on the way to recovery, who need
good air and surroundings to bring
them completely back to health. Each
poet will accommodate some 500 to
800 men.

No. 1409 Broad street.
Mrs. Dismuke 1 ccame ill yesterday af

attention of the most skilled physicians,
but their efforts proved fruitless, and the
end came at the hour stated.
The deceased was a beautiful and highly

of the Methodist church.
She* is survived by her heart-broken

of age.—Columbus Enquirer.
The death of Mrs. Dismuke will carry

Griffin, where she is well known and

Mr. W. H. Williams, and Mrs. George C.
Stewart, of Washington, D. C.
TJie remains will be interred in Colum

Col. F. D. Dismuke, Mr. and Mrs. Ed. C.

r Our Slang Puzzled Hirn-
Edouard Remenyi, the great violin
ist, who recently died, used to say that
some of the hardest studying be ever
did in his life began after an experi
ence he had in Detroit, says the De
troit Free Press.
“On my first tour of this country,”
be delighted in telling, “I worked
unceasingly to acquire a knowledge oi
the language and got on fairly well.
But the slang that I found so prevalent
baffled me more than anything elsp.
I gave a performance in Detroit one
night and met with a reception that
warmed my heart toward ber people.
Among other things, this appeared in
one of the papers next morning:
“Here’s an ugly little bow-legged chap,
whose clothes hung loosely about his
ungainly person, waddled to the foot
lights. But sakes alive! bow he did
play the fiddle!*
“Now I couldn’t make out what
'sakes alive’ meant, so I timidly ap
proached a gentlemanly citizen, told
him of my inability to grasp the mean
ing of this slang, and asked him if the
expression was intended to be com
plimentary.
“He kindly read it, and replied:
’Well, I should snicker.’
“I was more bewildered than ever,
and from that time on made the study
of slang one of my chief occupations.”

being aroused at the sight of jit, they
took off the coverings and resolved to
play a joke on their comradea They
placed the figure in an armchair at the
1 desk of the cashier and shut the door.
When the employees on night service
came, they opened the door and were
surprised to see a man sitting before the
cash box. They immediately closed and
locked the door and ran for assistance.
A policeman arrived, revolver i>

that he had to deal with a dangerous

As it did not obey the summons, the po

i The door was again opened, the arm
