It i»«aid that when thieves fall out honest men gel their dues, and the little ruction between Secretary Alger and Teddy Gooaemelt may result in exposing something of the political thimble under which this w*r i* being shuffled. ' The most enthusiastic and noisy patriot is not be who shoulders the rifle and marches to the field of con> flict, but be who stays at homo and robs the government on contracts for supplies and transportation. It is his influence which prolongs war, sacri- Sees lives and drive* the government into the wildest excesses of expend i« tore.—Quincy (III.) Herald. Really, when we come to take a comprehensive view of the situation, is appears thst our acquisition of southern territory will have a fsr rsaobing effect. No doubt the general result will be beneficial to the country, but in the matter of furnishing winter jeeorts, and in that of-competing with our fruit and beet growers, it is easy to see that special interests may suffer in away that may not prove very sc ceptible to the person* moat concerned. American money is somewhat of a vacillating article io Porto Rico, ac cording to a dispatch from Gen, Miles. When he first arrived there it was at a premium of 125 per cent, but fell in value as compared with Porto Rican money, presumably because only the latter was received io payment of cus toms dues Gen. Miles has ordered that it be received in payment for cus toms due* at a premium of 10 per cent until the definite comparative value can be arrived at. The Springfield (Mass.) Republican says: “The lottery of war appear* con spicuoualy in the cases of Capt. Sigsbee and Lieut. Commander Wainwright, who had the battleship Maine when ■be blew up. Sigabee was given what was considered much the better com mand, the big liner St. Paul, while Wainwright took the steam yacht Caraair, renamed the Gloucester. The Gloucester has won mor* glory than the St. Paul becau"* of belter oppor tunity which no one could foresee Wainwright is one of the conspicuous heroes of the war." The sale of the Buena Ventura, the first prise steamship captured by the United States navy, in New York the other day for $12,200 has led to the opinion that Spanish bottoms are a drug on the market, or else somebody i* making a good thing out of the government and the captors of the vessels. The Buena Ventura w.s valued at SIOO,OOO. A similar experi ence was had in tbe case of the Guido valued at $400,000 which brought at auction only $130,000. According to this the little British steamship Adul. of 372 tons valued at SBO,OOO Ly tbe appraisers, would probably bring, if taken to New York to be sold, some thing like SIO,OOO to $12,000. Her captors and the officers of tbe court expect better things of her. In view of these facta it would perhaps be of advantage to them to have her put oo the block right here al home.—Savan nah News. 1 *£»ert body Says **■ Ctocarvta Candy Cathartic, tbe cqom won derful medical dtecorerr of the pleas ant and refreshing to tbe taste, art gently and positively on kidneys, liver and bowels, cteanring tbe entire syatrm. dispel colds, cwre bCNKisote; fever, h&bitual eoostipfttioci and biitonsMM*.
