We do not remember the names of the brand, but a ward politician gave us a cigar the other day that smoked like a rope, smelled like a raptured sewer, and should have been named after Scovel.—lowa State Register. No woman who marries an old soldier now will be entitled to a pen sion alter he dies. The old soldier with a comfortable pension has furn ished inducements for many a design ing woman to wed, especially so under * the law recently in force, and hie death did not atop the pension. Bat all ie changed under a new law which went into effbet the first of July, and the veteran who gets married dow will have the satisfaction of knowing that he furnishes all the attractions While a regular army ie needed somewhat in the proportion to the extent ol oar territory and the impor tance and character of the interests to be guarded .European powers are learn ing from the present war that the ca pacity of the United Stales to protect itself from the invasion of its rights and interests does not depend merely upon the site of its standing army, but that every able-bodied, law abiding, free and intelligent American citizen baa in him the element# of a patriot and a soldier, which can be promptly brought out whenever occasion calls for their service —Chicago Tribune. Roosevelt and Hia Letters- Col. Roosevelt is cne of the moat talked of men in this cuonlry at this time. Hie round robin letter and bio letter to the secretary of war saying that the Rough Riders were far supe rior to ony state volunteer troops have drawn the attention ol the whole country to him. There is talk of a courtmartiai for somebody in connection with the round robin letter. The interesting question in connection with it is, wbo made it public? Tbe secretary of war ie satisfied that Gen. Shafter did not. . It is known wbo made public tbe letter which Col Roosevelt wrote to the sec retary. The comment is that the sec retary made it public tn order to de stroy Col. Ruoeevelt’s chances of get ting the republican nomination for governor of New York. Tbe letter baa undoubtedly hurt Col. Roosevelt with tbe national guard of that state. Still, it may nut prevent him from getting tbe nomination. A good many things are forgiven Col. Roosevelt which would not be forgiven another man. It is admitted of course that he is highly blamable for writing the letters, but the fact that the secretary made the one relative to the Rough Riders public, when there was no very good reason lor bis doing so, is having tbe effect of creating a public sentiment in favor of Col. Roosevelt. As tbe sit uation now presents itself it is doubt ful if the letters will do him a great deal of harm, as far as his political prospects are concerned. There is no doubt that the round robin letter bed tbe effect of hastening tbe prepara tionsoftbe war department for the removal of Geo. Shafter’s army from Cuba,-—Savannah News.
