He Made an Assault Upon a Citium of Hampton and Wai Killed by Infuriated Citizens. .<*> Special to the Call] Hampton, Aug. 19—Tbit morning: Jim Neely, a negro who formerly worked around here, but latterly baa been in the army, was found dead in the borne of a negro woman by the name of Ann Varner, ai a result of a disturbance here last nipht. Just to show bow quiet ibis village is today the matter passed almoat into \ history as a war incident, and the 1 peaceable games of draughts and such like have entirely obliterated all thoughts of the occurrence until it is suggested by some one eager for par ticulars. The facts in the case are these : Yesterday afternoon, Jim Neely, a mulatto negro, dressed in the uniform Os a United States soldier, with one of tbe improved bayonets strapped to his side, stepped off tbe 5:05 train here. He at once quartered at the home of Ann Varner, who be knew when he was at work here before he joined tbe army. This question of lodging being ar* ranged, be came over to tbe town with 1 tbe intention of showing off, and at once went into the store of H. A. & E. O. Moore, where he ordered a coca cola. He was informed by Mr. Moore that be bad bottled soda in the back part for negroes, whereupon be began cursing, saying that bis money was as “good as any G—d d—n white per son’s.” On leaving the store he went down tbe street cursing and in front of tbe store of J. C.. Tarpley Mr. W. Z. Hen derson, who was near some ladies, re monstrated with him which only brought out a volley of oaths. At this Mr. Henderson grabbed an axe handle and as tbe negro reached back for a weapon gave him several licas. Tbe negro ran off and soon returned with his combination bayonet and dagger, but Mr. Henderson bad armed himself and as be approached drew bis pistol. Before he could use it however, tbe negro slashed him across tbe right band, causing him to drop tbe weapon, and seizing it himself turned it on Mr. Henderson, who was bleeding from his wounds. This at tracted a crowd who came up firing and as the negro ran off nothing further was known of him until this morning. Coroner Priichell held an inquest and tbe following is the official ver diet: I “We, tbe jury sworn to investigate the case of Jim Neely, deceased, find that be came to his death from gun shot wounds at the hands of unknown parties. (Signed) J. M. Tarpley, Foreman." On tbe body of the dead negro was found tbe following pass: Camp Hobson, Aug. 18tb, 1898. Permit James Neely to leave camp and remain away until nine o’clock tomorrow night. Seargent John N. Straat, Jr. 25th Infantry. As no news can be heard from his company tbe coroner will probably bnry him here. Marriage Announcements- Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Washington, August 19—Admiral Be mpson’s flagship, tbe armored cruis er New York, will be the (irst Ameri can warship to enter the harbor of Havana since war was declared. Bhe will carry with her the mem» bers of tbe military commission ap pointed by the president to proceed to Havana to arrange with a similar commission to be appointed by Spain, the details of the evacuation by tbe Spa nisb troops. T bough no official information on tbe Subject is obtainable at tbe war dept uttnent in advance of tbe issue of tbe • orders, it is said that the Third Geoi *gia infantry, the Third Alabama infaj »try and the First Maryland in fant! y are among the number already selected for mustering out. Sei r a tor Bacon arrived here this more ing, and at noon called at tbe whik > house. His visit was in the in terest .of tbe Third Georgia regiment. He ti rid the president that tbe regi* ment. was ready to go to Santiago, despi -te the yellow fever, or 5 to any othei ' point on the island; that it was a fin< • body of men and would stop not-ft it anything where there was duty to be performed. The president said be was very much i gratified at tbe assurance and expresti ed himself as pleased with the spirit or the men of the Third Georgia, le said that tbe list had not been completed. General Corbit? assured Secnato r Bacon, as did tbe president, that if the Third Georgia was to be muster ed out it would not be because it had ’been raised under tbe second call. She war department authorities are not alar, oued about yellow fever among tbo troops in the United States, but a olcee watch is being kept at all points where tb< ire is tbe least danger. The thi’ee cases at Key West are tbe only ones reported in the south, and no additional cases have been reported in the le vet three or four days. At Montauk Point there are several cases, bat if it is .yellow fever it is a very mild type. Gen. She tier has informed the war department that after consulting with Gen. Lawtcm, commanding the de partment of Santiago, it had been con cluded that it will not be necessary to send more troops to Santiago for tbe prewvenco of peace and good order. Th..-, stat ament is made with tbe un derstanding* that tbe present military force will shortly be reinforced with the arrival of Fifth regular infantry and the Twenty third Kansas volun teers. X... * ■ ■ ' BAT’S IMMUNEB ARKITE- Shocking Crimes Committed by Sec ond and Fifth Regiments. / Santiago de Cura, August 18 Colonel Patrick Henry Rsy’a regiment of Third United States Volunteers came to anchor in tbe harbor this morning, and during the alternation the work of disembarkation began. Tbe first company to form on land was that of Captain Yancey Carter, which be immediately put in motion for the place where it passed in review before General Wood, wbo warmly cbmplimented Captain Carter on tbo appearance of his men. Captain Edward Wilson’s company was not allowed to have a rest, but was immediately marched out to Sib oney, where its dqty will be to protect the citizens against the ravages of Cuban outlaws. Tbe whole regiment i. in excellent condition, having suffered no casualty on tbe trip. Eight Spanish troopships are here to convey 15,000 troops to Spain. Tbe Spanish prisoners are a pitiable look ing lot of men, and their ranks are being decimated by disease. Tbe outrages which have been com mitted in Santiago by tbe Second and and Fifth volunteer regiments surpass description. Tbe two regiments ap» peered to be without control or discip line and broke ranks shortly alter reaching tbo city, going through from bouse to house, committing robbery, murder, rape and arson. Tbe fright ened Spanish and Cuban women fled in terror before these infuriated fiends, wbo ran them down, committing un mentionable crime. General Wood is highly indignant over tbe disgrace which has thus been placed upon American arms. Os all tbe atrocities which have been charg ed to tbe Spanish troops during tbeir occupation of tbe island none could have exceeded tbe terrible brutalities which have been committed by' these two regiments. Colonel Ray says that his men will show a different record, because they are better men, and they are under perfect discipline.—Josh W. Johnson in Atlanta Constitution. He is Officially Dead- We heartily sympathize with Corpl. Frank Danenhower of the Second Illi nois regiment, but we fail to see bow this case is to be remedied without fracturing military and official discip line—which cannot, of course, be thought of for a moment, Ba 7 B IB® Chicago Chronicle. It appears that tbe medical depart ment on August 11 reported Corpl. Danenhower dead. That warrior at once protested and in defiance of tbe official record insisted that be was not dead—that he was enjoying robust health and consuming with grea| avidity tbe hardtack and other rations provided for him by a paternal gov ernment. The medical department very properly declined to consider his representations. "You may think you are not dead,” it responded with calm official confi dence, “but you cannot expect your word to weigh against tbe hospital re port which records your disease, in ac cordance with tbe rules and regula tions of tbe United States army. You are dead, and that is all there is about it. Go and get buried some place and cease to annoy this bureau.” That is how the case stands today and, as we have said, there seems to be little hope for Corpl. Danenhower. Fortunately bis decease is purely offi cial and when he gets back to Chicago he may resume bis ordinary calling, while bis official widow—if he have one —can draw tbe usual pension. Thus it will be seen that Corpl. Danenhower, deceased, is not so badly off, after all.
