Without regard to the great moral
and political question involved, with
out regard to the proposition that we
a democracy, khall exercise despotic
rule over an alien people without their
consent, that we shall take away from
Spain territory that we have practi
cally promised to leave untouched, the
■hrewd and business like American
people wl'l be tbe laughing stock of
practical buainese men tbe world over
if they finally insist on the acquisition
of a commerce which may possibly
make an annual market of from
(2,600,000 to (16,000,000 worth of our
products at a yearly cost to tbe coun
try of at least (20,000,000. —Harper’s

A Santiago editor seems to have
conceived a very large idea ol what is
termed liberty of tbe press He pub
lisher a bitter attack ou Gen. Shafter,
conolnding by warning him that “the

■ Tbe American officers at Santiago will;
doubtless know bow to deal with ibis
rash editor. The artigle io his paper
wee doubtless inspired by personal en

a source oan hardly be regarded as
worth, an investigation, except as to it*
publication. Geo. Shafter will proba-.

the article is fixed before he makes hi*
exit from Santiago. It is needless to
say he will not ba influenced by the
silly threat warning him to leave the
city.—Columbus Enquirer.

Among recent interesting statistics
found In an article in tbe North Amer
ican Review, are figurea showing 'he
tremendous waste of valuable ground
in and around large cities io tbe burial
of tbe dead. Accepting tbe rate of
mortality annually as 20 per 1,000,
with her 3,500,000 population New
York city ba* to provide for 70,000
oorpaea annually. If 4,000 corpses
are crowded into one acre, tbe limit io
tbe case of tbe most thickly populated
graveyard, it will be seen that it re«
quires 17| scree annually for tbe in
terment of tbe dead of that city. In
the case of London 23 acres are re
quired annually. From these figures
it ie apparent that all the available
land a<dupd> these large cities, for tbis
pn/pose, must soon be exhausted. It
would appear that eventually crema
tion or some other method for dispos
ing of the dead, other than that now
in vogue, will have to be adopted in
those communities.

LIFE IMiNCE CD.
OF >IEW YORK.
IS THE OLDEST IN THE UNITED STATES AND
THE LARGEST IN THE WORLD.
Since organization to the present time, it has paid and now holds on
policies not yet due the enormous sum of (716,000,000. . ,
Its dividend record is unsurpassed by any other company m the world.
It protects your dividend* in case of death and provides for your old age.
See that your policy has this clause inserted in it.
As compound results are the source of life of all the old line companies,
what is best for the company should be best for tbe insured. And for best
results ttke a policy in the grand old MUTUAL LIFE..
Fathers see to it that the daughter, the pride of your heart, when as
sailed by the vicissitudes of life and touched by the cruel hand of fate, shall
be provided with a guaranteed income for hie. The MU CUAL LIFE, the
strongest financial institution known on the globe—twice as large as the
Bank of England—writes that guarantee.
And to the patriotic soldier who feels called upon to avenge the wrongs
to his country, we say don’t forget the loved ones at home —the Mutual Lite is
prepared to take care of all. And for the benefit of those who h & ve a Pyjcy
in this grand old company we give the following extract from a letter of the
president, Richard A. McCurdy:
“I wish you to assure every policy-holder in this Company
that his right* will be fully protected under all circumstances
and tha no one need hesitate to respond to the call of patriot
ism or duty through fear of the forfeiture of his policy.
