Address The Sioux City Business College, Sioux Oity, la. A Small Fire. Our city was thrown into a state ol excitement and confusion yesterday afternoon about three o’clock, over the alarm of fire. The streets were crowd ed with vehicles of every description, and the police began at ones to clear the way for No 1 hose wagon, which soon dashed down Hill street as fast as their spirited horses would run. Tbo fire originated ic the building on Broad street formally occupied by Morris A Kell for their foundry and machine shop.. The building was totally destroyed and tbe old wooden structure sdjoining it was so badly burned that it will be torn down. But for the heroic work of the fire department, the livery stable of Bob Griggs would have been burned. Tbe fire was exceedingly hot, but tbe men worked with blistering hands and faces until they got it under control. Tbe building in which the fire orig inated was occupied by P. T. Archer, as a mattress factory, but he was going out of business and only bad on band some straw. It is thought that some one passing the building threw a match or a cigar into tbe straw, which started the fire. Both tbe buildings burned belonged to the city and tbe lose will amount to between 1700 and 11,000, upon which there was no insurance. Bob Griggs* loss amounts to only a few dollars and was insured by Roewell H Drake A Co. How’s This? Th KM Yse Isw Always Bsagbt Dears the T'-T"* oignanirw Ol * r I A flwestion That th* Tree May lx Nelson G Trefry baa a plan of en couraging nature by tbe propagation of trees that will relievo tbe country of malaria and fever. The plan, to the casual observer, may seem somewhat unusual, an-l may even appear to be visionary, but an investigation into its merits, as established by scientific men, will ebow wbat it may be worth to our people In tho fever stricken dis tricts. Tbe plan, in simple, Is to plant tbe eucalyptus globulus, or Tasmanian blue gum tree, in tbe fever districts, and tbe tree will do the rest. This tree baa tbe reputation ol possessing tbe pioperty ol drying up tbe earth and absorbing malaria. Mr. Trefry, who has been a gardoer in Toledo for aix years, has a number of that he baa picked up io bis travels about tbe world. Mr. Trefry has a specimen of tbe Australian blue gum tree which be ' proposes to plant in Cuba and Porto Rico. •‘They grow to be 200 feet in height,” said Mr. Trefry. "Their growth is rapid, and this is perhaps one of the rea sons for their peculiar merit. The eucalyptus has these slender, leathery leaves, and you notice tbe quantify of aromatic oil which they contain. In some of the eucalyptus each side of tbe leaves is equally exposed to the light. Tbe tree, when grown, has a great commercial value. When green the wood is soft, but when it gets dr, it is hard and very tough. It is better than hickory as a firewood. It may be used for shipbuilding and for cabinet work, as well. Tbe tree also produces kino, a substitute for quinine, while tbe bark is more valua ble than other trees in tbe production of tannin.” These words of Mr. Trefry are back ed op by late encyclopedias and medi autboritiea. It is stated that the use of the tree in fever districts in Algeria, Boman Campagna and tbe Cape of Good Hops has been attended with tbe beet results. Mr. Trefry himself knows the worth of these trees in Fresno valley, California, where their use made habitable wbat is now one of the best districts in that great state. Mr. Trefry speaks of ibis in a letter to J. H. Brigham of tbe department of agriculture. He also gives a few facta in regard to bis experience. For tbe last twenty five years bo has devoted bio entire time to floriculture and hor ticulture. He baa worked for the Chicago Floriculture Company, the private place of I. C. Flood, at Mens Io Park, Cal.; W. F. Kelsey, nursery man, Oakland, and waa gardner for tbe Panama Canal Company, with headquarters io Colebra, for several years. His proposition to tbe government for the propagation of the trees is most reasonable. The plan is fair, as Mr. Trefry does not ask tbe government for a contract for planting the trees, but merely wants tbe supervision of the work, the government itself t) handle the trees. Mr. Trefry expects tc make Toledo bis home for tbe rest of his life, and would merely go to Porto Rico temporarily, and would not think of giving up bia business here.—Toledo Blade. As a rale the mountaineer Os Ken tucky is not a gastronomic connoisseur, and the visitor at his table is quite as likely to hear dried apples referred to aa “fruit” as be is to find any other kind of fruit on the table. Occasionally, however, one of them is sufficiently for tunate to get away from his fastnesses, and living tern, orarily down in the blue grass has an opportunity to acquire some virtues not otherwise obtainable. It was such a one I caught up with one morning in June along the ridge of the Cumberlands. . “I’m looking far a place, I said after a few preliminaries, “where I can stop for a week or so while I lookup some timber I have in this neighbor hood. Do you know of anyF’ “There ain’t much uv that sort eround here,” he replied, “exceptin you go to Mount Pleafcnt, an 1 reckon that’s too ter. But hoi’ on,” he broke in with a sudden thought, “thar’s the Widder Tackett She axed me yiatidy to see some uv you folks at the mill and tell ’em she had a place to sleep and eat two er three men es they wrnm’t too pertiokler. ” “Is it a pretty good place?” I in quired thoughtlessly. Tbe young man’s face flushed. “Well, X reckon,” he said with some emphasis. “She’s goto to be my mqfii er-in-law come next September.” “Oh, I beg your pardon,” I hastened to explain. “I only asked to know if she had good eating. Some of that we get in private houses even in the cities, you know, is not the best in the world. ” “Cities be darned, ” he said with a fine feeling. “Yer ain’t never tried the Widder Tackett’s pie yet, mister, an yer want to keep still till yer da Ain’t nothin like it nowhere, no matter what kind uv a pie she rets afore yer. It’s all ne plueibua unum, an no mis taka Why, I’m tellin yon that I sot down to one nv her pies last week, dern es I recomember what kind it wux, es I ever knowed, an I wus satin right into it like a hot shovel goto into a snow pile, an Bill Bogers acrost the table from me called me a liar, an I never said a dern word to him tell I had plum e’t my pie and got my teeth picked. Dem my buttons es I did, colo nel. ” I did not like to Inquire further into the mystery of what happened to Mr. Rogers after the last taste of the pie was safely housed by my informant, but I made a fair guess and went on to see the Widow Taokett concerning board and lodging for one man for one week. —Washington Star. BTORY OF A HAT. Bevealing the Secret of IU Two Tripe Around a Table. A number of literary men were at one time gathered in a well known chop house in New York. The conversation was of course brilliant, and the repartee sparkled with mirth and wit. During a lull in the talk the door slowly opened, and an old southern darky, grizzled with age, poked his head in and then slowly drew his body in after him. A waiter started to eject him, when one of the gentlemen cried: “Wait a moment Let’s see what the old boy wants.” The darky bobbed up to the table where this gentleman sat and held out his hat Throwing a wink to his neigh bors, the gentleman took the hat and, makings show of placing something into it, passed it on to the next man, who did likewise. The hat made a tour of the room, to the puzzled wonder of the darky. Tho last to receive it sol emnly handed it back with a polite bow, saying: “There, sir, don’t yon think yon have something to be thankful for?” The old darky looked solemnly around the company and, mechanically taking the hat, he said: “Gen’men, I’ze indeed glad dat I got eben de hat back!” The reply was so thoroughly enjoyed by the company that the darky left the place a much richer man than when he had entered it.—Kansas Oity World. Why He Fulled. A Wellington Chinese trader known as William Joe Gett, formerly a Chi nese interpreter, failed some time aga Here is an extract from his “statement of the canses of bankruptcy,” which, written in red ink, covered four pages of foolscap. After detailing his trading experiences the Celestial writes:— “I see my troubles endless to oome. I can’t get my money to pay. lam help less. During last three years over 86 creditors support my business. Dnring last two months not a one let me have a penny on tick. Fish never can live in a dry pond without water. Engine can’t move along without well supply of coal. Boy can’t fly his kite without tail on it Housekeeper pour out all tea to the cup no refilled water —how she give you more tea yon require? Tbe ure it the banana has developed its great value as an article of food, and tbe great army of banana consumers are pre pared to accept eagerly its farther de velopment—New York Post Doar. It is natural for a rich man to become familiar with a professional man he hiresand to address his physician as “My dear doctor. ” But to his solicitor he would not say “My dear lawyer!” although the legal man’s fee would be quite as good.—New Orleans Picayune. ■(.« ► ' IMNRBMHIMMMMMMfIMMM—*—rt^NS**^ —a—«giiiiii n nww— a——» WfMKTFB niIRIHRIK f LLmld I LII lA Ull IU OLD, ■ . —(o) ■ IN ORDER...
