TWO GEORGIA REGIMENTS ■'' - ARE ORDERED MUSTERED OUT AT oboe Th* Frm 4<nt Directs General Corbin toW> Mtfeet-Men Will Have Menth* Furlough. Special to Atlanta Journal.] WaSMi>gtok. Sept. B.—Seo a tor Ba* con bad a long interview with the pr—Ment today relative to mustering out Georgia troops. He represented to tbe president the great ’ importance of immediate notion to older that the young men who had volunteered while war was flagrant might at once return to their business avocations. Ho urged that either a certain pro* portion of the regiments should be mustered out in their entirety, oawK some general system should bo adopt ed by which men whose business re quired it should bo discharged, and their places filled by recruits. The president on the contrary pointed out tbe importance and necesaityof retain ing a certain number ol the volun teers and that under this necessity some must be retained against their will. After a full discussion lasting nearly one hour, the president consented to recognise Ray’s regiment as a Georgia regiment for the purpose oi estimating Georgia’s quota. Upon the basis of retaining one-half of tbe volunteers, be decided to muster out two of the Georgia volunteer regiments and dur ing the interview with Senator Bacon sent for Adjutant General Cotbin and directed him to order the mustering of them out. This will be done without delay. The president requested Sena tor Bacon to designate the two regi ments to be mustered out. The senator, however, declined to do so, stating that be would not take the responsi bility ol determining which regiment should be retained in tbe service where there were so many in each regiment who wished to be discharged and where there were doubtless somein each regiment who wished to continue in tbe service. - So soon as tbe designation is made., of she regiments to be mustered out the officers and men will be given a furlough of thirty days after wbicfi they will return and be paid off aud mustered out. Washington, Sept, 9.—There are strong rumors toddy that Senator Ba* con may be tbe Democratic member of the peace commission. When he called at the white house today it was conjectured that it related to tbe com mission, bat tbe senator subsequently declined to discuss this feature of tbe visit, which related principally and perhaps entirely to tbe mustering out two Georgia regiments. Senator Bacon’s name has been freely mentioned recently io connei tion with tbe commission. Yellow Jaundice Cured. Suffering humanity should be sup* plied with every means possible for its relief. It is with pleasure we pub lish the following: “This is so certify that I was a terrible sufferer from Yellow Jaundice for over six months, and was treated by some of the best physicians in our city and all to no avail. Dr. Bell, our druggist, recom mended Electric Bitters; and after taking two bottles, I was entirely cored. I now take great pleasure in recommending them to any person suffering from this terrible malady. I am gratefully yours, M A. Hogarty, Lexington, Ky.” Sold by J. N. Harris & Son and Carlisle A Ward druggist. Then and Mow Senator Lindsay served for four years in tbe Confederate army, and therefore knows something of war and its hardships. ~ I “I am glad to see,’’ be continued, “that sow complaints have come freftn the men in camp during these heated days. It degrades the American sol dier to the plain of children when we talk of the soldiers in front of Santiago having nothing but coffee, hardtack and bacon. For tbe last three years of the civil war five hundred thousand of our men never tasted a drop ol coffee. I remember that a ration of bacon served to the Confederate sol diers would incite the wildest entbu* eiaam, and patriotism. Hardtack was • luxury to us and we seldom got it, save when w> could capture sqpae Fed* eral commissary wagons.” OABTORXA. Bgaatars JFt THE THIRD REGIMENT —"'l* Has Been Ordered To Join Leo's Corps at Jacksonville. The Third Georgia regiment has been ordered to Jacksonville, and this time tbe order came from tbe war de partmeni at Washington direct to Col. Candler. < 1 About 7 :30 Wednesday night Col. Candler received a telegram from Ad jutant General Corbin at Washington telling him to report to General Lee at Jacksonville for duty and to be ready to depart from Camp Norihen in forty eight hours. As has been stated before this order was preceded on Saturday by a tele* phone message from Allan*.* stating they would be ordered away, but as no order canynpany thought it Was a fahb and were only rejoicing that such wag the case, when the order really canae, but lartr than expected. Many thi6k it possible the regimen t will break camp today and Is?ave for their new encampment tonight, bates tbe regiment will be- paid off here it is hardly probable they will leave before Saturday noon. And again there is a hitch in tbe commissary department. The rations are running short and not enongharenow on band to supply each man with a three days, or field ration. It may be Saturday noon before these arrive, if ep they win not get off before .fpß®aturday or Sunday morning. Consequently Col. Candler does not know himself when be will move with his regiment. Ac has been stated somecommisaion* ed officers had threatened to resign if tbe regiment was ordered to Jackson ville. Yesterday afternoon the resig nations of Capt. Robt. Hodges of Macon, and Lieut. T J. Ripley of DeKalb, were tendered and asked that the same take affect at once. Tbe reporter was informed that others were expect m! before tbe departure of the troops Capt. Goo P. Walker, of Battery B, telephoned the pay master in Atlanta yesterday asking him to come down and pay his men off that, they return to their home and work. This .bad the desired effect as the pay mas ter came down yesterday afternoon at 5 ;28 and was met at tbe depot by a sergeant’s squad and escorted to the camps, when be proceeded at once to pay off battery B. Tbe others will be paid off early today. Battery B, most of whom are from Savannah, left last night on a special train for Savannah. Battery A will leave thia morning for their homes. Col Roosevelt’s little sermon to the soldiers at Montauk Point last Sunday contained a good deal of excellent advice for tbe men, who ao nobly led the charge against the enemy before Santiago. Among other things Col. Roosevelt said: “No here’s a thing I want to warn you against: Don’t get gay and pose as heroes. Don’t go back and lie on your laurels; they’ll wither. Tbe world will be kind to you for about ten days, and then it will say : ‘He’s spoiled by the fams of tbe regiment in Cuba.’ Don’t think you’ve got to have tbe best of everything, and don’t consider yourselves as martyrs in tbe past tense. What I want of all of you is to get right out and fight your bat tles in tbe world as bravely as you fought tbe nation’s battles in Cuba.” Tbe Rough Riders think a great deal, of »beir colonel and the good ad* vioe he has given them will doubtless be highly prised by the men. GRIFFIN, GEORGIA, FRIDAY MORNING. SEPTEMBER ». 1898. ARMOURS’ BID REJECTED. Said to Hava Used Employes’ Names to Secure Bonds. • Washington, Sept. 8 Following the rejection of tbe subscriptioM of clients of the North American Trust Compsny, of New York, for $4,000,• 000 of war bonds, the treasury depart ment has rejected those of P. D. Ar mour A Co., of Chicago. The trust company’s clients know ing they would stand a better chance of getting bonds by subscribing for those of small denominations, seat io tbe names oi thousands of mythical persons. Ou each fictitious subscrip tion it was designated that the bonds should go to the trust company. This aroused tbe suapi-ioo of the treasury officials. Secret service agents were put ou tbe case and Solicitor O'Con nell made a special trip to New York. They found many forgeries and fioti cions names. Secretary Vanderlip said to a reporter last night that tbe department would take no action against the trust company, believing it to be innocent of any intention of wrong doing. The Armour Company subscribed through its employes for small de*- nomination bonds which aggregated more than $1,000,000. According to a provision of the war revenue law it was necessary for all subscribers to make oath to the fact that they were not bidding for some other individual or corporation, and as the Armour employes were subscribing at the in, stance of their employer, and were supposed to turn their bonds over to tbeir employer, they could not make this affidavit without perjuring them selves. Consequently tbe Armour subscriptions were rejected. SIOO Reward SIOO.
