The Spanish royal ensign captured
by the Sixteenth Pennsylvania Regi
ment of Volunteers in Porto Rico, ha*
been taken to Washington and shown
to President McKinley. For all any
body knows or ever will know, it is tbe
identical flag that Gen. Weyler, if be
bad but bis way, would have hoisted
over Washington alter bombarding
Cbioago, according to bls plan*, which
at one time during the late war were
so frequently announced.
It seems that wo shall bavo to do
without a Cristobal Colan in our navy,
unless we build one, says tbe Ssvaw
nah News. Tbe reports are to tbe
effect that Hobson's efforts have been
unavailing, and that the Spanish
wreck has been abandoned. A few o<
the Colon’s guns will be saved, but
that is about all. Tbe bulk, once the
finest ship io the Spanish navy, will
be a landmark for mariners and a
reminder of a great fight for a few
months, and then the ravaging sea
will swallow it up forever. There io
also a probability that tbe Teresa will
have Io be abandoned. Sbe i* said to
be firmly fixed on a rock and to have
a large bole in her bottom, making it
a matter of doubt if she can be gotten
offend floated.
George J. Gould’s opinion that "we
are on tho eve of an era of prosperity
perhaps unprecedented in our history’’
may be worth more then, that of an
ordinary forecaster, wbo is too often
merely an ordinary guesser. Mr. Gould
has immense business interests; he is
especially identified with railroads
which run through important sections
of the grain-growing states on which
so much of this country’* prosperity
depends, and hi* eye is continually on
tbe business barometer which indi
cates tbs state Os trade, not merely in
tbe United States, but in the whole
world. Wbo more likely, then, than
he to have early and accurate infer
mation of coming prosperity or ad
versity? Nor is be likely to make
false reports for purposes of deception,
because he would have no object in
doing so. He is not a stock operator,
wbo might find It to bis interest to is
sue false statements at times Jor tbe
purpose of affecting tbe market.—
