The belief is becoming general that
tbe warships and troops that are being
sent to Manilla are not for set vice
agalnet the insurgnete When such
ships as the Oregon and lowa are sent
around the world, Uncle Sam has bls
eye on bigger game than Aguinaldo’s
crowd.
Tbe investigation of tbe war de
partment will probably not cut much
of a figure In tbe congressional elec
tions. The commission is made np oi
Republicans and Democrats, and
Nortben men and Southern men. The
country will await lie findings with
confidence. The politician who at
tempted to forestall its conclusions
and make political capital of its in
vestigation would probably find him*
self talking to a cool audience.
Tber/ is a fine, large steel floating
dock at Havana. Il was towed there
shortly before the outbreak of the
war. It Is large enough to accom
modate the largest of our warships.
Since tbe dock is not automobile, it Is
claimed that it must bo surrendered
with the other atstionary public prop
erty In Cuba, and will become tbe
property of tbo now government of
Cuba, or of tbo United States as the
protector of Cuba, and administrator
of the affairs of tbe island, pending the
establiabment of a permanent Cuban
government. A dock of tbo kind in
the Caribbean is needed by tbe navy.

A novol election, or rather a novelty
in eleotione, will be held by tbe men

ofiSoiala have prepared tbe ballots lor
the approaching state and congren*
sional elections, and have forwarded a
sufficient number )f them to San
Francisco for the accommodation ol
the men of tbe regiment. The ballots
will be taken aboard of the transport,
and the men will vote on shipboard
when election day comes around. The
probabilities are that the ship will be
about hall way across the Pacific at
that lime.
A New Ycrk storekeeper tbe other J
day bought a knotty, mangy, ball
asleep, tired looking little broncho at
tbe sale of tbe Rough Riders’ mounts. ;
Tbe price paid was $7 50. During its ;
first in its new stable home tbe
bretfnho kicked down a partition that
aemrated it from tbe feed bin and ate
up $-W wpfth ol provender, kicked a
new S2OO buggy into kindling wood, i
chewed up a set of harness, came near
crippling a high priced borse, and was
looking for something else to do when
its new owner and the hired man drove
it into a corner with pitchforks. The
broncho is ntQf'spending some time i»
tbe country.
Friends of tbe postal Savings bank
proposition are much pleased with tbe
recent order of tbe Postmaster General
which allows postmasters to issue
mopey orders payable at tbe office
where issued. They say that this
makes the posloffipe virtually a bank,
and that it is tbe entering wedge for ’
the establishing of a postal banking
system. Possibly they have not over
looked the fact that the postoffioe
charges a fee for every money order 1
issued, but it would seem that they
bad. It is not customary for deposi
tors to pay the bank a fee for taking
cart/of their money ; and while other
institutions are paying interest on de
posits, it is not likely that the post
offices will be burdened with cash re- <
ceived for postal orders from persons
who merely wish to know that their
money will be well taken care of.

MUTUAL LIFE INSURANCE CO.
OF NEW YORK.
Breaks The Dividend Record.
It haw always held the record securely, but the claim paid by the compa
ny upon a policy issued to Mr. Mark Banks, of Connecticut, the particulars
of which are given here, shows that THE MUTUAL LIFE has in this in
stance eclipsed all previous dividend results:
Mr. Banks was insured for " .o’aqs no
The dividends amounted to
Paid to the estate .A: $17,028.00
How does this happen? Mr. Banks paid all the premiums in cash, and
he did this for fifty-tour years. He did not utilize any portion of the divi
dends in payment of premiums, but permitted the Company to invest these
for his benefit. Here are the particulars:
Policy No. UN. Issued March 5,1845. Amount $5,000.
Age 40. Annual premium, $l6O. Life Plan.
Originalinsurance in 1845, •
Dividend additions paid in 1898,.
Amount of death claim. 417>028,W
54 Premiums paid by insured 2_______
Realized to estate over premiums paid $8,388 00
Being nearly equal to a return of all the premiums paid with two and a halt (2|) per
cent, compound interest per annum, with insurance increasing annually from
at age 40, to $17,028 at age 94.
The dividend additions paid to the estate were 139 per cent, of all the premiums
paid for the insurance. .
Mr. Mark Banks was the treasurer and cashier of the Greenwich Savings
Bank, and died at the good old age of ninety-four. He appreciated the
power of compound interest, and nis wisdom is exemplified by the result of
nis method of investment —a result that has never been equalled by a policy
holder in any other company in the world.
