Six hundred men, machinists, black smiths, skilled workmen and laborers, have gone on strike at the Havana ar senal, refusing to work Unless they are paid five months’ arrears of wages The strike began on Monday and no settlement has yet beenjmade The Spanish cruiser Conde de Ven a dito, the gunboat Galicia and torpe do boat Neuva Espana are on stocks at the navy yards undergoing elabor* ate repairs, preparatory to their trip to Spain. The arsenal strike is liable to delay the evacuation so far a* the , navy is concered unless the difference is soon settled, as the vessels in their present condition are quite unequal to a sea voyage st this time of year. R, NUTT, T, C, COTTOM SBOWZBS’ MEETING ' * di - t Will Be Held Seme Time In Decern bet*'ln Mew Orleans. Some time ip December the Cotton Growers’ Uoion will have a general meeting in Naw Orleans, according to present plane, which will be the most important gathering of cotton grower* held in the south for several year*. Th* Cotto* Grower*’ Union was or ganized in Memphis recently to sue c*ed the National Cotton Growers* Protective Association. The union was organized alone different lines, one of the principal features being that there wiR be sub-organization* ail over the south. In some sections the mdvement to organise has already been started. Recently South -Caro lina farmers held a meeting and orga nized for their state The meeting was largely attended and much inter est was manifested in the new organi zation. The existence of yellow fever in Mississippi and Louisiana has to some extent retarded the work of or ganizing in those states, and also in Alabama,, though there is no fever io that slate As soon as the quarantines are done away with the cotton grow ers will become active, and by the time of the proposed meeting in New Orleans it is thought there will be perfect organizations in Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas, Alabama as well as Tennessee. The New Orleans meeting has not been definitely decided tipon as yet, though It is practically assured. The foundered the Cotten Growers’ Un ion hope to make it the largest meet ing of cotton growers ever held. The Cotton Growers’Union was the out come of the Memphis meeting, which was attended only by a few of the members of the organization, those in attendance being vice presidents most ly. They believe that a Southern farm oiganization could be formed that would prove of great benefit to the individual farmer, and the plan is to get as many little and big planters in the sob-organization as is possible. To* New Orleans meeting will, Uke up the general plans of ’the Cotton Glowers’ Union. No definite plans have beetfmade for the meeting yet, as it has not been formally called. Consolidated Returns. The managers at the different pre cincts for the election held Wedness day, met in the court house at noon yesterday and consolidated the vote There were only 454 votes polled in the entire county, and of that number the democratic nominees received 439, while the populist candidates received only 15, which well makes Spalding the ba., uer Democratic county of the State, ’ , In Line Creek, Cabins, Akin, Africa and Mt. Zion districts there was not a single populist ticket voted. The three amendments of the con stitution were carried by a vote of 377 to 55. Beats the Klondike. Mr. A. Ct Thomas, of Marysville, Tex, has foufld a more valuable dis covery than has yet been made in the Klondike. For years he suffered un told agony from consumption, accom panied by hemorrhages; and was ab solutely cured by Dr, King’s New Dis*t covery for Consumption, Coughs and Colds. He declares that gold is of little value in comparison with this mavelous cure; would have it, even if it cost a hundred dollars a bottle. Asthma, Bronchitis and all throat and lung affections are positively cureo by Dr. King’s New Discovery for Consumption. Trial bottles free at J. N. Harris & Son’s and Carlisle <fc Ward’s drug stores. Regular size 50c and SIOO. Guaranteed to cure or price refunded. To Marry In Texas. The marriage of Miss May Lambdin to Mr. J. D. Mr. Williamson was Recently accidently shot, and it was deemed best lorbim not to lake the trip and he telegraphed for tbe bride elect to come to Texas and \bave the ceremony performed there. Accord ingly, Mrs. A. M. Lambdin and Mies Mary left Sunday morning for Waco. They were scheduled to arrive there yesterday and the marriage will occur today. Tbe people here regret ex ceedingly the circumstances which force tbe change in the original plans. Friends will await with Interest the news from Waco.—Barnesville Ga zette. w ’ ■ • - • ■ ..v •, BRIFFIN, GEORGIA, FRIDAY MORNING, OCTOBER 7, 1898. This is advised a* making a prominent display of Amer ican sovereignty and also giving poa session of the harbor entrance, thus obviating any possible «übmari*e treachery against war ships. As soon as possible thereafter the American* are to take control of the custom bouse and collect revenues, preserving Spanish rates till sufficient warning of the change has been given to importers and merchants. Then gradually American control is to be extended until it includes the whole municipal and provincial ad ministration. » Mr. H. A. Pass, Bowman, Ga., writes: “One of my children was very delicate and we despaired of raising it. For months my wife and I could hardly get a night’s rest until we began the use of Pitts’ Car minative. We found great relief from the first bottle.” Pitts’ Carminative acts promptly and cures permanently. It is pleasant to the taste, and children take it without coaxing. It is free from injurious drugs and chemicals. C -A 8 *l* O H X A- ■ Bmti the Kind You Hare Always Bought Signature Piano Patent. A patent has been allowed to Dr. S. A.
