The sympathies of the country at
largo will go out to Gov. McLaurin of
Mississippi, says the Savannah News.
Since the breaking out of the lover in
bio state he has hardly known where

time bis fellow cilisens have not
known. At last advices he bad evac

he had taken refuge, and was in the

according to a Jackson special, and
then gave up the quest.
The Indian war in Minnesota, which
has resulted so far in the killing of
some eight of our troops and the
wounding of others, was caused, it is
said, by an attempt to arrest some of
the Pillager tribe as witnesses in a
case of liquor selling, contrary to law.
Such an arrest to the Indian mind,
seems wholly unjust, %nd the failure
to appreciate the peculiarity of the
Indian mind led to the outbreak. We
have been dealing with Indians for
several hundred years and ought to
know them better. If we fail to keep
the peace thus with our Indians who
are contemptible in numbers, what
luck will we have with the Filipinos,

The Constitutional Amendments.
One of the bappieat results of the
election last Wednesday Is the adop
tion of the constitutional amendments
providing for the election of judge*
and solicitors of the superior courts by
the people instead of by the legislature
as heretofore, says the Rome Tribune
This to a groat extent takerthe se
lection of judges out of politics, or
rather out of the bands of politicians
who, by their shameful prostitution of
their position as representatives of the
people, making it a matter of personal
dicker r>ther than of public benefit,
bad brought such reproach upon the
legislature and the bench itself
It would have" been much belter,
more honest, more fair and moie dem
ocratic to have had the election by
judicial districts Instead of by the state
at large but as that could not be done

have already got, and will trust to a

MUTUAL LIFE INSURANCE GO.
OF NEW YORK.
Breaks The Dividend Record.
It has always held, the record securely, but the claim paid by the compa
ny upon a policy issued to Mr. Mark Banks, of Connecticut, the particulars
of which are given here, shows that THE MUTUAL LIFE has in this in
stance eclipsed all previous dividend results:
The dividends amounted to
Paid to the estate.• • .-$17,028.00
How does this happen? Mr. Banks paid all the premiums in cash, and
he did this for fifty-tour years. He did not utilize any portion of the divi
dends in payment of premiums, but permitted the Company to invest these
for his benefit. Here are the particulars:
Policy No. 1,283. Issued March 5,1845. Amount $5,000.
Age 40. Annual premium, $l6O. Life Plan.
OriginaHnsurance in -$O'OOO?
Dividend additions paid in 1898, .12,028.00
X Amount of death claim•’
54 Premiums paid by insured.
Realized to estate over premiums paid $8,888.00
Being nearly equal to a return of all the premiums paid with two and a halt (2|) per
cent, compound interest per annum, with insurance increasing annually from SS,OUS
at age 40, to $17,028 at age 94. .
The dividend additions-paid to the estate were 139 per cent, of all the premiums
paid for the insurance.
Mr. Mark Banks was the treasurer and cashier of the Greenwich Savings
Bank, and died at the good old age of ninety-four. He appreciated the
power of compound interest, and nis wisdom is exemplified by the result of
his method of investment —a result that has never been equalled by a policy
holder in any other company in the world.

“Do you have
much call for
these?”
He was referred
to a gentleman who
proved to be the

•• The sale of Ripans Tabules is
constant and is increasing, due
especially to the influential character
ofthe testimonials in the daily press,
and growing out of these, through
the recommendation of friend to
friend. Satisfaction with them is
very general When once they are
begun I notice that a perm a- ?nt
customer for them is made. This, I
believe, is through their intrinsic
merit, which proves the bona fide
character of the advertising. I think
them specially useful In the general
