In bis speech at St. Louis the presi

“It most be a matter of great grati
fication to the people of the United
States to know that the national credit
was never bolter than now ; for the
first time In the country's history the
govsroment is floating a three per
. cent, bond, every dollar of which was
sold at par, and are now at a premium
of five cents on the dollar, and that
thia profit has gone to the people. The
' loan was a popular one, and it has
been the source of much satisfaction
that people with their surplus savings
were able to boy the bonds.
, “It ie ac Interesting fact that while
wo offered but two hundred millions
of bonds for sale, over fonrtsen hun
dred millions were subscribed by the
people of the country, and by the
terms of sale do one wae able to re
ceive bonds in excess of <5,000.”

MUTML LFE iNSURANGE CO.
OF NEW YORK.
Breaks The Dividend Record.
It has always held the record securely, but the claim paid by the compa
ny upon a policy issued to Mr. Mark Banks, of Connecticut, the particulars
of r which aid given here, shows that THE MUTUAL LIFE has in this in
stance eclipsed all previous dividend results: _
Mr. Banks was insured t0r.,..;. ™
The dividends amounted to _
, Paid to the estate. - -
How does this happen? Mr. Banks paid all the premiums in cash, and
he did this for fifty-tour years. He did not utilize any portion of the divi
dends in payment of premiums, but permitted the Company to invest these
for his benefit. Here are the particulars:
Policy No.
Age 40. Annual premium, $l6O. <
Original insurance in 1845, - -
Dividend additions paid in 1898, ....1BA»°-
Amount of death claim....
54 Premiums paid by insured ••
Realized to estate over premiums paid $8 388.00
Being nearly equal to a return of all the premiums paid with two and a halt P®J
cent, compound interest per annum, with insurance increasing annually from >o,tMJV
at age 40, to $17,028 at age 94.
Tne dividend additions paid to the estate were 139 per cent, of all the premiums
paid for the insurance.
Mr. Mark Banks was the treasurer and cashier of the Greenwich Savi n g ß
Bank, and died at the good old age of ninety-four. He appreciated th< ■
power of compound interest, and his wisdom is exemplified hy the result o
nis method of investment-—a result that has never been equalled by a policy
holder in any other company in the world.
