The Rains Hare Cost The’Farmers of this Section Thousands of Dollars- The farmers of this section are be* coming very much discouraged, and it does seem •• it everything ie against them. The unusual amount of rain which has fallen since the cotton began to open hti lost them thousands of dol lets and left their crops in such a con dition that it will hardly pay to har vest them. The eqoinoxial storm found the fields while with cotton which was blown out by the wind, and in many instances it was left on the ground. A large planter stated a few days ago that if he bad been free front debt be would have plowed his entire cotton crop under and used it to enrich bis lends. He said at least a third of bis crop was On the ground and was a total loss. j Cotton pickers cannot be eecored, although some- planters are offering half their crop to have it gathered. Acres on every farm in this section have never had a boll of cotton picked, and that which is carried to market ' does not bring enough to pay the cost ol production. The rain has also damaged corn and conservative planters say that one third of their crop has rotted in the field. They say this corn will kill stock if fed to them, and the farmers may prepare to buy Tennessee ' mules next year in great numbers. Jeter Gay, a large farmer of this county, says if the molded corn is soak ed in water from twenty four to forty eight hours it csn then be fed to stock without any serious consequences, but if it is fed as it is stock will die at a terrible rate, It is hoped the farmers will act upon Mr. Gay’s suggestion, as it will cost them nothing and may avert serious losses. ThOy are a peculiar J poetic—near to nature’s heart sort of people —extremely faithful one to tba. other, their law being ipaioly that of a good Winchester rifle aimed with a steady band and a clear eye. Their land as a rule is rocky and bad—as moonshining or plainly the ] making of corn whiskey is done in the mountains—or knobs. “Knobs” being the foothills of the mountains and about all they can raise is corn. It is a God given right banded down from generation to generation among them, this right tq* manufacture moonshine whiskey, so called because by fear of the ‘‘Gov’menters” their arch enemies, they work in some bidden nook by the light of the moon. When one comes to think of it it is a wonder that some of our playrights have not taken ad vantage of this class of people—the beautiful mountain scenery and this religion of these people to make a play ' of before. In “Knobs O’Tennessee” the new and beautifnl play by the American authors, Lincoln J. Carter 1 and Hal Reid have used this (heme, and have made an eleven curtain call hit of it.
