Meriwether has built fences across tbe roads and have guards to mind them. The town is completely bottled up. With tbe energies of England and France devoted to war our manufac turers would have their own way in tbo markets of tbe world, and it would probably bo found when peace returned that they had conquered a place from Which they could not be dislodged. These sordid computations are unpleas ant, but, as wo have frequently been reminded of late, "war 1s bell.”—New York Journal. A now neo baa been found in steel by a Sheffield (England) firm, who are now making a steel harness trace, con sisting of a narrow ribbon of sloe), from f to 1 inch wide, rolled very thin and eased in leather. A single trace of this kind, when tested at the Shef field testing works, recorded a tensile breaking strain of 4,575 pounds, while an ordinary leather trace of tbe best quality, tested at the same time, broke at a strain of 2,700 pounds. In addi tion to being lighter and stronger than tbo ordinary trace, tbe steel article is about 20 per cent, cheaper. The steel Is necessarily of tbe very finest quality, and is so pliable that it can be twisted in any direction. This kind of steel is being used in bicycle tires. Tbe rib bon cased in rubber is placed inside ,i tbe ordinary tire, thus making punc tures practically impossible, and, it is claimed, increasing the speed of the ■ cyclist. < •■ On Industrial Training- Hon. Patrick Welsh, of the Augusta Chronicle, was in Nashville the other day, and in an interview with a re porter there be had this to say of tbe opportunities presented to the young men of tbe sooth : “What an opportunity is there for the young mao of the south? The trouble io the past has been that it was too easy for him to make a living. What be should emulate is tbe prac tical sense of the young man of tbe east and of England. Give him a good education, but, after be has se cured tbe education, make him prac tical. There is not room for all of them io the professions of medicine, law ortho ministry. Let them learn tbe practical work of the world. Let them become producers of wealth Wipe away tbo foolish distinction between good society and the soiled shirt of labor. That is where the money and snbstantiaiaess of tbe south is to coma from. II they have’ a good education they are better pre pared to do efficient work in tbe fac tory, and they osn better manage tbe business. The south needs technical training schools and less ot tbe else sics.” WOTICE! Parties owing us are requested t > come in and, .make immediate settle ment.
