Ths Cause of Cheep Cotton.
The treasury department has just
published a aeriea of tables showing
the remarkable increase in American
cotton production and coincidental fad
in price. Since 1872 tbe United States
has more than quadruped her produc
tion of cotton, end during tbe same
period tbe price has fallen to about
000-loortb what it was in that year.
Io 1871 tbe cotton crop of the United
States was 1,348,084,000 pounds, with
an average price of 2219 cents a
pound; io 1898 tbe crop io reported at
5,667,000.000 pounds, with an average
price of 623 cents a pound. During
tbo same period cotton manufactured
into prists fell from 788 cents per
yard to 2 17 cents
While this enormous increase was
taking place in America there waa no ,
decrease m any part of tbe world. In
1871 onr country produced 70 per cent
of tbo solton of the world; today it
produces 85 per coot of tbo world. It 1
is very apparent from those figures
that ths cotton supply has increased
out of ratio with tbe increase in popu
lotion and consuming power, and
tbwrotore we need look no further for
an explanation of tbe low price pre
vailing today.—Forsyth Chronicle ‘

Breaks The Dividend Record.
It kas always held the record securely, but the claim paid by the compa

of which are given here, shows that THE MUTUAL LIFE has in this in
stance eclipsed all previous dividend results:
The dividends amounted to
Paid to the estate • 028.00
How does this happen? Mr. Banks paid all the premiums in cash, and
he did this for fifty-four years. He did not utilize any portion of the divi
dends in payment of premiums, but permitted the Company to invest these
for his benefit. Here are the particulars:

Originalinaurance in 1845 •
Dividend additions paid in 1898, ..WJJXMO
Amount of death claim
54 Premiums paid by insured
Realized to estate over premiums paid $8,888.00
Being nearly equal to a return of all the premiums paid with two and a halt (W
cent, compound interest per annum, with insurance increasing annually from so,wv
at age 40, to $17,028 at age 94.
The dividend additions paid to the estate were 139 per cent, of all the premiums
paid for the insurance.
Mr- Mark Banka was the treasurer and cashier of the Greenwich Savings
Bank, and died at the good old age of ninety-four. He appreciated the
power of compound interest, and his wisdom is exemplified by the result of
his method of investment —a result that has never been equalled by a policy
holder in any other company in the world.
