Thos. J. White.
Williams Wa'n no Coward.
War stories of tboso "not mentioned
in the reports” are now coming in ae
returning soldiers recall tbe incident!
of battle, and very many of these are
full of the moot touching palboe, says
tbe Courier Journal. Such a tale of a
Santiago bero was recently told to me
by a regular army officer. In tbe two
Jaye’ real fighting before Santiago
men of the different regiments be
came mixed, and for a time lost to
ihMir commands. This condition gave
rise to tbe report that a certain few
men had shown the “white feather.”
One of tbe officers of Gen. Lawton's
division observed a colored trooper of
the Tenth Cavalry among his men,
who explaind that be had lost his
command, and asked that he be al
lowed to remain where be was.
He stayed and did fine service that
day, and none of bis white comrades
were able to outdo him in notable
deeds of bravery. He twice risked
losing bis life assisting tbe wounded
to places of safety, but each time es
caped uninjured.
That night be asked tbe officer be
bsd met earlier in the day to give him
a note to his own commander, ex
plaining his absence, and certifying to
hie good conduct during the fighting
that day. Thia was willingly given
him, and with the precious paper
clasped tightly in hie hand, under
cover of darkness he ataited in search
of his own command.
The next morning at dawn Lieut,
L started on a search for wound*
ed men in bis division, happened to
stumble over a prostrate body. He
immediately recognised tbe brave
cavalryman of the day before, who was
fast losing consciousness.
After struggling a moment for
strength to speak, the prostrate man
held up his precious little slip of paper
and said : “Give it to Capt. A ,
of L Troop, if you can find him, and
tell him Williams wa’n’ no coward.”
With a look of satisfaction in his
eyes his hand dropped to his side, and
he was dead.
That bero rests now in a shallow
trench, with ten or twelve other un
known privates.

After a long experience with typhoid
patients, Dr. Ussery of St Louis main
tains that the best food for them is the
banana He explains by stating that in
this disease the lining membrane of the
small intestines becomes intensely in
flamed and-efigorged, eventually begin
ning to slough away in spots, leaving
well defined ulcers, at which places the
intestinal walls become dangerously
thin.
Now, a solid food, if taken into the
■stomach, is likeiy to produce perforation
of the intestines, dire results naturally
following, and, this being the case,
■olid foods or those containing a large
amount of innutritions substances are
to be avoided as dangerous.
But toe banana, though it may be
classed as a solid food, containing as it
does some 95 per cent nutrition, does
not possess sufficient waste to irritate
the sore spots. Nearly the whole amount
taken into the stomach is absorbed, giv
ing the patient more strength than can
be obtained from other food.—Ameri

Make Friends-
It is no use in making enemies, says
an exchange, fcr life is Joo short io
cherish malice and enmity. A man
will surely be unhappy who makes
enemies Make friends. It is easy
to do when you set your heart on the
task. Anybody whose friendship is
worth having can be won by an up
right and manly course of conduct.
If you disagree with a man you can
avoid the subject of dispute, and still
remain friends. The man who culti
vates a suspicious disposition and
imagines that every fellow he meets is
trying to undermine him or get the
best of him is never happy. It
strengthens some men to trust them-
As long as you show them that you
suspect them of evil intentions, the
temptation to do wrong is almost ir
resistible. But if you show that you
have confidence in him bis own man
hood comes to bis rescue and upholds
him in tbe hour of temptation. It is
s good idea to make a friend wherever
you can. It is tbe pleasantest occu
pation in life. Meet your feilowman
with a smile and a cheerful word.
Stretch out your hand to him and
show him that you have an interest
in his well being. It requires little
effort and tbe results are beyond bu
man calculation. A great many
friends, gained by a single word or a
gesture, prove a support and stay in
the time of need.
An Important Difference.
To make it apparent to thousands, who
• think themselves ill, that they are not as
, flicted with any disease, but that the ays
( tem simply needs cleansing, is to bring
comfort home to their hearts, as a costive
condition is easily cured by using Syrup
of Kgs. Manufactured by the California
Fig Syrup Company only, and sold by all
