The Kind Yon Have Always Bought Bears the . >?"*** Signature of Carlyle and Titian. At a Royal Academy dinner several artists and literary men waxed enthu siastic in praise of favorite painters. “His glorious colors is a fact about Ti tian,” said one. “And his glorious drawing is another fact about Titian,” cried a second. Carlyle, who bad been listening, interrupted the remarks by 1 saying, with deliberation: 1 “And here I sit, a man made in the image of God, who knows nothing about Titian, and cares nothing about Titian—and that’s another fact about Titian.” Thackeray, sipping claret, paused and bowed to Carlyle as be remarked : “Pardon me, that is not a fact about Titian. But it is a fact— and a lamentable one—about Thomas Carlyle.” Bobbed the Grave. A startling incident, of which Mr. John Oliver of Philadelphia, was the subject, is narrated by him as follows: “I was in a most dreadful condition. My skin was almost yellow eyes sunk en, tongue coaled, pain continually in back and sides, no appetite—gradually growing weaker day by day. Three physicians bad given me up. Fortun ately, a friend advised trying ‘Electric Bitters;’ and to my great joy and sur prise, the first bottle made a decided improvement. I continued their use for three weeks, and am now a well man. I know they saved my life, and robbed the grave of another victim ” No one should fail to try them. Only sOcts per bottle at J. N. Harris & Son’s and Carlisle <fc Ward’s drug store. Scents Under the Skin- The papers are amusing themselves by discussing whether it is justifiable for a woman to scent herself by means of byperdermic injeetions. It seems to us that there is nothing to discuss. Women who have money and no oc cupation will alway rdo foolish things. They are at the mercy of every quack and chariatan, and nothing that we can say is likely to have much effect on their folly. People who consult palmists and fortune tellers are likely to take up any new erase. As a mat ter of fact, the cpstom of scenting the breath and body by use of drugs ins jected under the skin is by no means new, and there are many meats in Paris and elsewhere which exist solely for this purpose. The massage ebops would have adopted the idea long ago, bat their customers are exclusively men, and man’s folly does not run in this par* ticular direction. We have seen a neat little outfit consisting of a hypo dermic syringe and a number of cant nulae obtained from one of the Paris houses, and we have been made ac* quainted with the formula of the so lutions employed, but it would serve no useful purpose to make them pub , lie. We can only express a hope that the apparatus is aseptic, or at all events that it is occasionally washed, for if this precaution is neglected there is likely to be a pretty general i dissemination of disease, and some of the ladies who now find time hang heavily on their hands will be less pleasantly occupied than they ha< anticipated.—British Medical Journal. Force of Habit. Lcrd Kelvin, the celebrated English scientist, has just celebrated his 74th birthday. He was born in Belfast, Ireland. For over fifty years he has held the chair ot natural philosophy at Glasgow University, and this was justly considered so remarkable that I in 1896 the jubilee was enthusiastically celebrated. A good story is related ol his lecturing methods at the uni versity. As a professor of science be , can use long words in such a formid* , able array as would mako a dictionary t break its binding with horror. Dur r ing a course of lectures once on mag netism, for instance, he defined an j ideal magnet as “an infinitely long, , infinitely thin, uniform and uniformly and longitudinally magnetized bar,” t and the misguided students vocifer ously cheered, which caused the pro ’ fessor to say : “Silence!” The defini* t tion was made and cheered, with the usual reprimand, frequently daring , the lectures. Once, near the conclu sion, however, the students did not cheer, but Lord Kelvin, from force of habit, rapped out “Silence” the same as before. 1 O A.
