AY EXPLOSION OF GAS —;— „ \ Wrecks a Portion of the Capitol at Washington- WABHiwaTOM, No*. 7.—An explo eion and firn at 5:13 yesterday alter noon wrecked the eupreme court room •od the rooms immediately adjoining ft on the main floor of the capital. Tbe entire central eastern part of the great marble pile from the mein floor to tbe subterranean basement io practically a mam of rains. Tbe force of the explosion was so heavy that the coping stones on tbe outer-walla just east of tbe point where tbe explosion occurred were bulged out nearly two inches; win dows in all that part of the building were blown out; and lacked dodrO were forced from their binges quite a hundred and fifty feet from tbe scend of it. ■ . Fire followed tbe explosion so quick* ly as to seem practically simultaneous with it. The explosion shook tbe immense structure to its foundations and was beard several squares from the capilol. It occurred in a email room tightly enclosed by heavy stone walls in the subterranean bisement immediately below tbe main entrance to tbe old capital building, and was caused by the igniting of escaping gas. Tbe capital building has been dam* aged a number of times before by fire, but it is said yesterday’s fire will prove tbe most disastrous in the history of tbe building. On the occasions prior to this, fires have been started by ex plosions of gas. In the opinion of capital officials and mechanics, who have examined the structure, tbe loss will reach prob ably $200,000 to tbe building. Tbe lose on tbe library and records can *be scarcely estimated in dollars and cents. A million dollars could not replace them, because many of them no duplicates are in existence. The Joker’s Happy Death* The funny man, whose business it ”'as to construct tbe weekly page of jokes for tbe Sunday Yell, lay on a hospital cot swathed in bandages, says .an exchange. He was not long for this earth. Early that morning he had tried con* elusion with tbe front end of an elec tric car, with tbe usual result. Tbe funny man's lips moved and he mut tered incoherently. A hospital in terne stepped softly to the side of the sufferer’s cot and bent his bead for ward to listen •‘I care not to live,” murmured tbe jukist. “The one light in my dreary existence went out last week when my precious one passed away from Ibis earth.” “Yes?” said the young surgeon in terrogatively. “Bbe is dead,” continued the dying man. “During her lifetime we lived together at tbe same boarding bouse. Ebe did society (or tbe Yell and wrote poetry for tbe Sunday issue, which effusions she signed lolantbe. I called her Jo for brevity.” '‘lndeed?” said the surgeon softly. “Last week,” went on the profess sional jokeet, “she attended a wed ding in a cold, damp church, wrote an account of the ceremony for tbe Yell, came home and Was taken ill. Two days later she died and left me in dets pair. Abl Sweet lol” Tbe surgeon, visibly affected by tbe suffer’s tale, could not restrain bisown emotion “Very sad,” be murmured in tbe dying man’s ear. “What did Io die oft” A light of triumph came for one brief instant in tbe joker’s fast dim ming eyes as he answered, “lodide of potassium,” and passed away before tbe startled and enraged surgeon could jump with both feet on his face. A Harrow Escape- ' Thankful words written by Mrs. Ada E. Hart, of Groton, 8. D. “Was taken with a bad cold which settled on my lungs; cough set in and finally termi nated in Consumption. Four doctors gave me up saying I could live but a short time. I gave myself up to my Savior, determined if I could not stay with my friends on earth, I would meet my absent ones above. My hus band was advised to get Dr King’s New Discovery for Consumption, Coughs and Colds. I gave it a trial, took in all eight botth-s It has cured me. and thank God I am saved and now a well and healthy woman.” Trial bottles free at J. N. Harris <fc Son’s ot Carlisle A Ward’s drug store.
