An Important Difference.
To make it apparent to thousands, who
think themselves ill, that they are not af
flicted with any disease, but that the sys
tem simply needs cleansing, is to bring
comfort home to their hearts, as a costive
condition is easily cured by using Syrup
of Figs. Manufactured by the California
Fig Syrup Company only, and sold by all
druggists. ’ ’
A Bold Burglary.
Burglars entered the store of The R.
F. Strickland Co., at Concord, Wed
nesday night and made a good haul.
They drilled boles in the safe, inject
ed a quantity of dynamite, and blew
open the doors. When they gained
access to the money vaults they found
gold, silver and crisp bank notes to the
value of S3OO or S4OO, which they car*
tied off
The burglars were evidently pro
fessional safe blowers, as they did a
neat job, and disturbed nothing else
in the store. '
The burglary was not discovered
until yesterday morning, and there is
no clue as to who committed the deed.

SIX MEN KILLED.
Wilmington The Scene of a Bloody
Battle Between Whites and Negroet-
Wtlmimgtow, N. 0., Nor. 10.—Tbie
baa been the moat exciting day in the
history of tbia city, and nearly every
hour brought a clash between the
whitea and negroea.
In one of the fights, which occurred
at noon, three white men and three
negroea ware killed and several were
wounded.
The disturbance waa caused by an
editorial in the Record, published by a
negro, which was derogatory to the
white women.
A mass meeting was held yesterday
and the editor, Manly, waa given
twenty-four hours in which to leave
the city He was also notified to sus
pend publication of the Record and
move his outfit al once.
The negro sent up no reply to the
committee, and at the expiration of
the tv enty-four hours 600 prominent
citizens, headed by ex-Representative
Waddell, marched to the Record office
prepared to carry out their threat
The door was burst open, and the
citizens rushed in and began the work,
of destruction. The furniture and fixt
ures were smashed and thrown into
the streets, and the building was fired
and destroyed.
The editor saved bis vile carcass by
flight, and could not be found by the
justly enraged citizens.
Intense excitement prevails and
special trains are being run into Wil
mington from other towns with rein
forcements.
The Light infantry, a regular state
military organization, will probably
take command of the situation here
and its officers direct the patrolling
and guarding of the city. It is un
derstood that the governor has given
bis sanction to this plan, and if car
ried out it will have a salutary effect.
The local detachment of United States
naval reserve in fatigue uniform and
dragging their new one pounder rapid
fire gun are now at the scene of
trouble with the Light infantry and
several hundred armed citizens.

Still Preparing For War.
Notwithstanding the fact that the
Fashoda affair is regarded as settled
preparations for war are going forward
in both England and France. When
the French government declared that
it did not regard the possession of
Fashoda as being of any consequence,
there was an easier feeling through
out Europe, because it was believed
that the cause of trouble between the
two countries bad been removed. But
the continued preparations for war
have renewed speculation as to wheth
er a basis for continued peace has yet
been arrived at, saye the Savannah
News.
When the French government eaid
that it did not regard Fashoda as being
of any consequence, and that it would
instruct Maj. Marchand to withdraw
from it be did not mean that France
would consent to withdraw from the
rich province ,'of Babrel-Ghszal. In
that province the French have estab
lished seven posts. It is a part of the
Nile valley, and it is said to be one of
the most fertile and desirable parts of
Africa.
Will England consent that France
shall keep the province? It is thought
that she will not, and that France
knows she will not. England claims
that the Sirdar’s victories entitle the
Anglo-Egyptian power to the whole of
tbe Nile valley from its source to its
delta. Assuming that this is England’s
position, may it not be that this prov
ince is the cause of war preparations
now being made io England and
France?
In the English papers the idea is
obscurely expressed that England is
getting ready to adopt a firm and ag
gressive policy in respect to Asia and
Africa. Just at present, however, it
looks as if the greater part of her at
tention were being given to Africa.
It is regarded as certain that France
will not consent to withdraw from
Bahr-el-Ghazal, even to avoid war
with England. If England insists
upon her right to it, war was not avoid
ed, but. only delayed, when France
consented to give up Fashoda.

The State Treasury Deficit-
A deficit of over one million and a
half dollars in our state treasury is
enough to put our state authorities
and the legislature to thinking, says
the Rome Tribune.
It calls for a bait in appropriations,
and reduction of expenditures.
Reduce every salary to a gold stand
ard, which means one half.
Lop off the military excrescences,
abolish all offices that are not absolute
ly essential.
Put oil and fertilizer inspectors on a
small salary and let the fat fees they
have been pocketing go into the pub
lic treasury.
Reduce the school appropriation to
their vested endowments.
Restrict tbe State University to its
legitimate endowments.
Reduce tbe number of judicial offi
cers and put the remainder on salaries
and turn the fees into the treasury.
This in the direction of common
sense and economic reform.
Then look into the matter of tax re*
form.
Hunt up all the tax dodgers and
then equalize them ; make every man
pay alike.
Do all these things, but for God’s
sake don’t issue any more bonds. That
will only increase tbe burden, without
meeting the emergency.
Let the legislature hurry up its
work. No junketing, and go home.
T. B. Rice, a prominent druggist of
Greensboro, Ga., writes as follows: *
"I have handled Dr. Pitts’ Carminative
for eight years, and have never known of
a single instance where it failed to give
perfect satisfaction. Parties who once use
it always make permanent customers. We
sell more of this article than all the other
