William Perrine gives a graphic picture of Washington’s memorable winter of suffering at Valley Forge in the December Ladies’ Home Journal “ Sentinels pacing in tbe snow on the outposts took off their caps and stood in them to save their feet from frerz ing,” he writes. “Here stia there could be found even officers in a sort of dressing gown made of old woolen bed-covers. Tbe stout-hearted women of New Jersey sent their quilted clothes as Christmas presents, with the patri otic jnst that as women were said sometimes tn wear the trousers, so now there would be an excuse for might wear tbe petticoats Washing ton, who never exaggerated, said that few men bad more than one shirt, many only half a one, and some none at all. Nearly three thousand men were barefooted, and occasionally might be seen a soldier who was all but naked! Sometimes there was nothing to eat in the camp but rotten salted herrings. Men were known to snatch at tbe dough of half baked cakes in the kitchens of the farmers’ wives. The contractors and the commissary agents and the Continental Congress had brought twelve thousand men to the verge o! starvation, and the blood of General Wayne ran hot with rage as be looked on his poor fellows weak with hunger. Indeed, there was but one wooden dish for every mess Washington himself dined one day on potatoes and hicy nuts. ‘My good man,’ be said to the sentinel in front of his headquarters, pacing up and down in tbe bitterness of a cold morn ing,‘have you had anything to eats •No, sir,’ was the reply. ‘Give me your musket, then, and go inside and get some breakfast,’ and the tall com mander gravely walked op and down as guard over bis own bouse.” Beata the Klondike. Tbe climate here is as near perfect as it is possible for it to be Cooler in summer than either in the north, east or west and yet mild and pleasant in winter, with only enough of frost and cold to kill the worms and insects that prey upon vegetables and garden truck, says ths Valdosta Times. Doting tbe present week Mt sec tions of the north and west are wrapp ed in snow and ice, while tbe reports say that enormous losses have result ed to every kind of property from tbe blizzard which has prevailed. In the west snow is several feet deep and thousand of cattle and other stock have been frozen to death. The farmers there are held in the narrow est limits in pitching tbeir crops. They have to make in a few months what they consume during tbe year, Wbat a difference it is with this section of tbe country. Our soil yields a grain crop almost equal to the best lands in tbe west and, where given proper attention, bogs and cattle thrive just as well. We can equal them in raising tbe crops which they live upon, and we can raise a thous and things that tbeir soil and climate cannot produce at all. The advantages which we have in these great blessing are attracting tbe attention of tbe outside world as never before and settlers are coming this way rapidly They are coming to take advantage of tbe opportunities, and many of them will thrive npon crops that we have neglected in tbe past. Tbe possibility .of wonderful diversity in the crops of the South have been trampled upon in the eag erness to follow alter King cotton The low price of that product and the depressing condition that has came to farmers in the cotton belt will prove a blessing if it leads them into other lines. Adversity is a bard teacher, but a good one when its lessons are read aright. Tbe blessings of our section are worth little unless they are taken ad vantage of in the widest sense.
