A meeting of scientific men, notes the Scientific American, has just cons eluded ita labors at Bristol, Eog , in connection with the British associa tion for the advancement of science. The body was composed of leading authorities co the study of terrestrial magnetism and included some of world wide reputation. Magnetic surveys of the United States are by law in* trnated to tbe coast and goedetic sur vey, so that tbe United States was rep resented by C- A. Scott of the sur vey. Tbe questions lor deliberation before this body concerned the prspa« ration of a plan (or a systematic mag netic survey of the entire globe, and tbe deliberation of the conference re sulted in a general recommendation for that purpose, The principal work of the conference centered in the wider questions involving magnetic obser vations; their, at present, unsatisfac tory distribution over tbe glube, and their iuadquscy as regards numbers. The United States is in a position to take a most important step in the advancement of our knowledge of ter restrial magnetism by establishing and maintaining a well equipped magnetic observatory on one of the Hawaiian islands. Their position is unique, be ing central Io a vast unexplored or rather magnetically unknown region and well adapted for the special study of tbe Ajjpdifications which the diurnal and aeauiar variations of the magnetic needle are supposed to undergo in consequence of a surrounding ocean as contrasting with a continental sur face. Fill a bittie or common glass with your water and let it stand twenty-four hours; a sediment or settling indicates an unheal thy condition of tbe kidneys; if it stains your linen it is evidence of kidney trouble; too frequent desire to pass it or pain in the back is also convincing proof that tbe kid neys and bladder are out of order. What to Do. There is comfort in the knowledge so of ten expressed, that Dr. Kilmer’s Swamp- Root, the great kidney rembdy, fiilfllis ev ery wish in curing rheumatism, pain in the back, kidneys, liver, bladder and every part of the urinary passages. It has always held the record securely, but the claim paid by the compa ny upon a policy issued to Mr. Mark Banks, of Connecticut, the. particulars of which are given here, shows that THE MUTUAL LIFE has in this in stance eclipsed all previous dividend results: Mr. Banks was insured for '■■'fo’noann The dividends amounted to ..I2,uaaw Paid to the estate $17,028.00 How does this happen? Mr. Banks paid all the premiums in cash, and he did this for fifty-tour years. He did not utilize any portion of the divi dends in payment of premiums, but permitted the Company to invest these for his benefit. Here are the particulars: Policy No. 1,233. Issued March 5,1845. Amount $5,000. Age 40. Annual premium, $l6O. nnn Original insurance in 1845, • Dividend additions paid in 12,028.00 Amount of death claim 54 Premiums paid by insured 8,640. OU Realized to estate over premiums paid $8.388 00 Being nearly equal to a return of all the premiums paid with two and a halt (2|) per cent, compound interest per annum, with insurance increasing annually from $5,009 at age 40, to $17,028 at age 94. . The dividend additions paid to tbe estate were 139 per cent, of all the premiums paid for the insurance. Mr. Mark Banks was the treasurer and cashier of the Greenwich Savings Bank, and died at the good old age of ninety-four. He appreciated the power of compound interest, and his wisdom is exemplified by the result of his method of investment —a result that has never been equalled by a policy holder in any other company in the world.
