THE MORNING CALL. Vol. X. No. 161 A FIGHT FOR LIFE! WILL goens on trial for the MURDER OF CHAS CURRIER Sensational Charges Made by the De fendant in His Statement—Will go to Jury this Morning. When Judge Reagan called the nd' journed term of Spalding Superior court to order yesterday morning the court room was crowded to suffocation, for it was known that the first case to be tried was that of the State vs Wil) Goeus, who is charged w ith the mur der of Charles Currier. When the case was called the pris oner came into court and took his seat by hie attorneys. He was immediate ly joined by his wife with a little babe in her arms, aud l:is mother and father. The work of securing a jury occu pied about an hour of the courts time, and nearly the entire panel was called before the jury was obtained. The twelve men in whose hands the life of Will Goens now rest are Tbos. J. Bar field, W. P. Maynard, E L. Rogers, A. W. Harper, Wm. Anderson, W. B. Crowder, J. E. Maynard, J. 8 Staple ton, P. 8. Parmalee, J. P. Nichols, H. T. Fuller and E D. Brewster After the jury was sworn in several witnesses for the state were introduced. They were not in the house where the carousing was going on and although they beard the report of the pistol they could give but little information of interest, and court adjourned until 2 p. m. When court convened in the after* noon the defendant made his state ment, in which he said : Never knew Currier until a few days before Christ mas. On the day Currier was killed they had been playing cards aud drinking. Currier kept picking quar rels with him which he tried to avoid. Currier cursed him for a— of—, which he did not resist. They finally clinched and were separated by Camp bell. He told Currier it was time to go home to his wife. Currier replied : “G— d— your wife, you will never see the bitch again ; I left the bouse with the intention of killing you.” He then drew his knife and advanced upon me. I could not get away and drew my pistol and fired. I was struck with the knife, which cut my coat and shirt and tore off top button of coat. C. A. Campbell was the next and most important witness of the case. He bad been with the two men all the morning and was the only eye-witness to the killing. He said he was present 1 at the difficulty , which occurred on the 25th of December last. Currier and Goens were quarreling and talk ing as drunken men usually do Did not hear Currier say anything about killing Goens. . Currier bad no knife, his right band was closed and if be had a knife be would have seen it. On cross examination be said he dident know Currier previous to the time of difficulty. Currier and Goens clinched when he seperated them. Did not see knife but could not swear he did not have one. Currier called Goens a—of—and cursed his wife. Goens said it was time for him to go home. Currier replied you d—of—you sbant go and they clinched. When they fell Currier was shot. Goens tried to keep out of the difficulty. E. Barth after taking the stand said he knew Chas. Currier, roomed with him and never saw the knife claimed to be Currier's—would have seen it, had he possessed one. He bad been in Griffin for two month at that time, and was from Springfield, Mass. One or two other unimportant wit nessee were introduced when the case closed. The remainder of the afternoon was occupied by the speeches of Cols. Smith and Flynt, attorneys for the de fendant. At 5:30 court adjourned until 8 o’clock this morning, when Solicitor General Bloodworth will speak for the state. The advance was sounded at 6 : 30 a. m., the cavalry’ leading the co'umn at a smart trot across the open to the right, eventually reaching a clump commanding the rear of Guadaloupe. Supported by the Oregon volunteers the advance force opened a heavy fire on the rebels. The response was fee ble and desultory, apparently coming from handsful of men in every covert. At 7 :30 a. m. a river boat started to wards Pasig. The rebels were first encountered by this vessel in the jun gle near Guadaloupe. Steaming slowly, the gunboat poured a teriffic fire from her Gatling guns into the bush. In the meantime Scott’s battery ashore was shelling the trenches and driving the enemy back. The artillery then advanced to the ridge of bamboo and drove a few of the enemy’s sharpshooters away with vol leys from their carbines. The artillery moved to a ridge com manding Pasig and Barleros. By this time the enemy was in full flight along a line over a mile long and the firing was discontinued tem porarily in order to give the troops a rest before making the attack on Pasig, General Wheaton then attacked and captured the city of Pasig, east of Ma nila. The enemy made a stand for an hour, but at the end of that time weie forced to retreat. The loss of the Filipinos was thirty killed-and sixteen prisoners. Os the United States forces six were wounded. No Right to Ugliness.
