WASHINGTON ilii I.R. !
Washington, March 11-Mr Mc-
Kinley hasn’t gore to Tl omasvilk-,
Ga , where be will be the gut st of Boss
Hanna for several weeks, solely t‘> get
ri st and recreation. Not by a jugful
—there is political scheming and a
lot of it, in the trip While they areat
Thomssville the Lading admin’s ■ ■
lion senators and tepri set at ives will
visit them, and tn addition to clinch
ing Mr McKinley’s renonlit ation next
year, the question of whether the ad
ministration will try to prevent Czar
Reed’j re election as speaker of the
house, will be carefully gone over and
decided If it were only a question of
inclination, it might be considered as
already decided. Mr McKinley and
a number of his closest friends ar
acre on Reed, because of his altitude
toward all of the administration meas
ures that came before the late con
gress and would gladly antagonize bis
re-election as speaker, if they thought
they could beat him, but there’s the
rub. The are afraid to fight Reed,
unless they are reasonably cetain of
being able to control enough votes to
down him, because if they do so and
fail, they know he would fight back
during the life of the fifty-sixth con
gress, which will be as long as that <d
the administration.
Senator Candler, who t.as a reputa
tion for tirlking against things sup
ported by his party, but always voting
with the party, has an acute attack of
anti-trustphobia just now. He talks
against the trusts as seriously as
though he was a good democrat or
populist, but that is no reason to ex
pect that he will vote against any
measure desired by the trusts which
may come before the senate, in the
future ; he certainly has not done so
in the past.
Navy Department officials say that
armor tor our warships cannot be
bought for S3OO a ton, tl.e limit set by
the last Congress. A statement made
before the House Naval Committee
shows conclusively that it could be, if
there was not an armor trust, formed
to bleed tire government One of the
members of this trust sold Russia
three thousand tons of the same ar
mor for $240 a lon. It was claimed
by a representative of that Company
that $40,000 was lost on that order, for
the purpose of introducing their ar
mor in Europe This claim was a di
rect admis-ion that the armor only
cost $255 a ton ; yet, the trust got the
price fixed at $550 a ton in the bill
as fiiet passed by Congress The re- ,
dilation was made by the Senate. That
is the sort of business that makes rich ;
trusts and disgusts those who believe
in old fashioned honest dealing with j
the government ns well ns with indiv
iduals If the trust can make armor
for $253 a ton, which its agents say it
can, it can certainly afford to sell it. to
the government for S3OO a ton, but, of
course, that is no reason that it will.
It will probably prefer making the
next Congress raise the price, and the
next Congress, being republican in
both branches, will probably be easier
to control than the last was.

Thc readers of this paper will be pleased
to learn that there is at least one dreaded
disease that science has been able to cure
in all its stages and that is Catarrh. Hall’s
Catarrh Cure is the only positive cure now
known in the medical fraternity. Catarrh
being a constitutional disease, requires a
constitutional treatment. Hall’s Catarrh
Cure is taken internally, acting directly
upon the blood and mucous surfaces of
the system, thereby destroying the foun
dation of the disease, and giving the
patient strength by building up the consti
tution and assisting nature in doing its
work. The proprietors have so much faith
in its curative power, that they offer One
Hundred Dollars for any case that it fails
to cure. Send for list of Testimonials.
