At The Grand.
Those who attended the perform*
ance of Rip Van Winkle, at the
Grand last evening, by Samuel W
Glenn assisted by Dobson A Ring’s
Company of players, were treated to a
genuine surprise. It has been so long
assumed that no one but Joseph Jef
ferson could do j ustice to the part of ;
Rip, that Mr Glenn’s thoroughly artis I
tic and sympathetic portrayal of the I
character was a revelation to many.
The delicate pathos and subtle humor ;
of the lines lose nothing in his hands.
He is a polished actor of the old school
and is especially great in the awaken
ing scene and in characterization of
Rip as the broken, tenderhearted old
man, with just enough of the spark
ling, ne'er-I<-well of his youth re
maining to allow him to appreciate
the humor of his strange condition
Os the members of the company the
acting of the part of Derrick von
Slauss by William H.Bokee and of
Gertrude, Rip’s wife, by Josie Gran
ger, was especially we'.l done. The act
ing and dancing of the Rooney child
ren, Josie and Julia, was remarkably
clever. Their graceful dancing re
ceived the endorsement of several
bursts of well earned applans.i.
Taken as a whole it was a refined,
artistic performance and merited the
appreciative reception it was accorded.
The play will be repeated tonight.—

5 Gentlemen: I can not recommend your Pitts' Carminative too A
