GRIFFIN f GEORGIA, THURSDAY MORNING, FERE GARY 16 1888
The Minority Cot Thero.
New York Tribune.
They toll me tbe following glory of
u certain Southern member of Cou
giess, whose finances are iu a ebron
ic state of disorder here as well ns at
home. His district was split into
two factious at tLo last Congression
a! election, one faction supporting a
candidate who was known to favor
certain railroad schemes, and the oth
er putting forward our friend as an
Anti-Monop list and Guardian of
tho Peoples Liberty. The latter
faction was in a hopeless minority,
and when, therefore, she present
Congressman undertook to cinvass
it, his case was regarded as utterly
hopeless; especially »o, in view of the
fact, that his cr ditois joined in a
body the runks of the opposition.
Our friend's method, however, bad
the boldness and s'mplicity of true
genius. On a:riving at a village or
settUment, ho would at once call
upou his most furious credit*r and
addrtssed him as follows:
Now, my fritDil, you hold my Dole
for $400, borrowed money, don’t
you? It was protested t'O years
ago. wasn’t if? You never expect to
get a cent, do yon, now? Very good.
And you are no uncompromising
friend of tho ra lioad, while I am an
anti-monopolist to the backbone.
Exactly. Now let us understand
each other. I am running for Con
gress, and this is a critical stage in
my affairs. If I am elected I may be
able to pay my .creditors. I don’t
say I will, mind you, but there is a
chance that I may. If I am defeat
ed, that is tlie end of it. I shall
have to get-out of here, and begin
life over again somwhere else, and
devil ^ c lit of your money will you
ever see. Come, row, what are yon
going to do?
And to tho horror of the railroad
candidate, the minority re«iDforced
by the Congressman’s creditors,
swept the district like a whin wind.
Of the same Congressman they
tell me ut the clubs the story that
he came into ihe House one day this
week looking somewhat forlorn and
decidediy demoralized.
You look pale, remarked a sympa
tbizing friend.
Yes; I’m so nervous I don't know
what to do.
Wbat's the matter*
Well, you see, last night I dream
ed I paid off my creditors, and I am
so worried to know where the devil
I got tbe money from.

A New Theory or the Dread Disease
Which Seems Very Sensible.
Iu fifty percent, of the cases, con
sumption is only the symptoms of
ether disease!
The disease, in such c ises, cannot
bo cured until the out so, whatever it
is, is removed.
More than half tho victims of coo
sumption have albumen in the
water.
“What does this indicate?''
Albumeu esnnot appear in wbat
escapes from tbe*bodv, if the organs
which take the water from tbe blood
are healthy.
We drink water in large quantities
every day. This water goes through
the body and washes away tho waste
matter and decay of the system, and
takes it to the kidneys- If these
organs are healthy, this waste in
solution iu the water is removed by
them. If not, flienatnral action is
reversed, and, instead remains iu
the blood, but the real life giving
eletnei t or the albumen escapes.
Fancy the effee!
This uric acid waste is a rank
poison, and attacks the weakest or
gan first. The B.cmpton Hospital,
of London, England, shows in its
reports that over 52 per ceDt. of tho
victims of consumption are really
victims of kidney disease, the lung
tronble being shown by the presence
of albumen in the blood, to be but
the indication of kidney derangement.
The real cause of pulmonary trouble
being so authoritatively shown to be
faulty, even though unsuspected
action of the kidneys, explaius why,
iu order to master the dieaded con
sumption, one must rid the blood
of the uric acid irritant, which in
flames and burns np the lung sub
stance. For this purpose there is
nothing equal to that great specific,
Warner's safe cure. This remedy
has won the favor of medical men
all over tbe world, purely on its tuer
its. We have no doubt that if the
kidneys are kept in natural action,
consumption and a great many
other diseases, caused by uric acid,
will not only be cured, but will be
prevented.
J, W. Westlake, of Mt. Vernon,
Ohio, had a sister residing in Michi
gan who was thought surely to be
going with consumption. She took
ten bottles of Warner’s safe cure,
which he sent her, and he says: That
was the last I heard of her consump
tion. Thousands of 3Ucb cases are
developed every day.
Dip your finger in acid every day,
and it soon festers and is destroyed.
Send acid poisoned blood through
the lungs every second and the., soon
give way.
This, then, is the condition of
things that always precedes con
sumption: First, weakened kidneys;
second, retained uric acid, poisoning
tbe bloc J; (ho development of dis
ease in the lungs by the irritant acids
passing through them. Tlrcn there
is a little cough in the morning;
soon, thick, yellow matter is spit up,
followed by loss of flesh and strength
with dreadful night sweats; aud
when the patient goes to his school
physiciaD for help he is put on cod
liver oi’. which his stomucb, weak
•ned al.o by uric acid in the blood,
cannot digest. Because there is no
pain present in th# kidneys, tho pa
tient does not tLiok they are affect
ed. but the kidney acid is doing its
work every minute, every hour, day
and tight, and by and by lue dis
eae* of ifco lungs has advanced until
pus is developed, then comes hemor
rhagt-p, and .it last the glassy stare
of the eyes, which deuo o tbit the
end is near.

ed that their old h nd engine was
not effectual, and asked the couzcil
to dispose of the engine and provide
tbe company with a hook and ladder
track. If our present fire system
is to bo coutiuned—and the couucil
has given no indication that it will
be changed soon—this proposition
of the company is a veiy reasonable
Rod sensible one. A fire engine
without water is a very useless thing,
and the hook and ladder, beiDg our
only effectual branch of the service,
might well be reinforced.
The bill for supplies for Nos. 1
and 2 firo companies was read and
ordered paid.
Tbe subject ot a bell tower was
then lakeu up. aud Alderman Hud
son* showed some pretty designs in
white on a bine background, the av
ersge cost, with bell, being about $1.
500.
Aldermen Burr and Deane were
in favor of taking more time before
acting upon the matter.
President of No 1 Hammond was
granted permission to say a few words
and made an eloquent plea in favor
of prompt action. If the town was
to burn up some time while he was
out home, he wanted to hear about it
before next morning. He favored
theerection of a tower at the junc
tion of Hill and Solomon streets, with
a city clock.
Alderman Dean thought the clock
would look much better on the new
city hall which wonld soon have to
be built.
The matter was referred lo the
fire committee, as usual.
Alderm in Hudson presented a bill
for $50 for last year’s salary for
Alderman Patrick.
Mayor G'anrland ruled this out ol
order
Mr. Hudson appealed,
Thocou'.itil voted Alderman Pat
rick $50 for last year’s services.
The Mayor stated that it would
not be paid with his sanction, as
there was no law for it.
Meyer Grantland then took the
floor and moved that a day be
named and the people allowed to
vote on gas and water works; but
after an irregular discussion the
council adjourned in the same pro
found darkness as ever.

Henry County Politics.
Henry County Weekly.
Tho Constitution’s correspondent
teems to have a very fair idea of the
political situation in Ilenry county,
but we do not think the race for rep
resentaiivu wiil narrow down to the
question ot whiskey or no whiskey;
or that if such an issue should be
made, that the race will necessarilly
be confined to the tjto candidates de*
ignated. Both Dr. Gunter and Col.
Harwell are good men, and either one
of them would make a splendid rop
resenutive; but we must not lose
sight ot the fact, that there are other
possible candidates who bay® already
been announced by their friends. We
have it from pretty fair authority
that our present representative, Hon.
Arch Brown, will, in all probability,
be a caudidate. If he should enter
the list, will create a considerable stir
among the people; it is generally
known that he has made a good rep
resentative, and is popular with the
people. It will be well for those who
are making out representative to take
into consideration the fact that Dr.
W. H. H. 3 eck, of Locust Grove, is
being urged by his host of friends to
make the race for representative.
Should he consent to do so, it is quite
certain t' at he will enter the field
with a splendid followmg. The many
friends of Col, W. P. VVilsoD, of
Hampton, are urging his candidacy.
Owing to several facts connected
with the section which he repre
sents, will make afoimidable candi
date. Iu tbe first place that portion
of the county in which Co!- Wilson
resides has not been represented in
tue house for many years. He repre
sents a very popnfbus seclioD, and
being personally very popular will
make a formidable candidate if he
concludes to make the race. Mr J.
