BLAISE'S FORTITUDE.
The Cincinnati Commercial Ga
aetle makes his'ory to suit itself.
Commenting on Blaine’s letter, it
said:
“When the election of Cleveland
was established there was no sincere
Republican in the country who sc
cepted tire result with greater fort!
tude than Mr. Blaine, Wo say, then,
that the party has no further claims
that it can decently urge upon him
against his private wishes; and since
it is his desire to take his place fora
time in the ranks as a private member
of the great organization be so lately
led, lira! desire must be respected.”
When the election of Cleveland I
was established,Mr. Blaine delivered
at Augusta as vindictive, as incendia
ry, as undignified a speech a» ever
fell from the tips of a defeated caodi
date, ft was a surprise alike to friends
and to opponents. It revealed t >e
man in his true eharaater; it showed
him to he the demagogue ant* tricks
ter liis enemies had described him.
The speech was in word and spirit
in direct opposition to the ap¬
peals he had made during the cam
paign lor Southern votes. It showed
not fortitude, but weakness and
wounded vanity and disappointment
to a degree that, in one occupying
his position, was astonishing. That
he was subject to these weaknesses
the world had by that time every
reason to know,-but it was believed
that he had the self control, the sense
of fitness, the dignity sufficient to sup
press or control them.
This speech and the dismissal of the
slander suit at Indiapapolis will fur
nish a magazine of ammunition for
use in the campaign, if in spite ot
that letter the Republicans nominate
Blaine.
