ANOTHER LETTER FROM THE JIN¬
GO STATESMAN.
A Private Note Which Probably
Wllb a Recent Epistle--
Born This Letter.
The Hon. B. F. Jones, of
burg, is chairman of the republican
nalional committee. Appropriately
enough, he is a protected iron maun
facturer, with#Undeviating faith in
the benefits of a system which en
riches him and dignifies and enno
bles his operatives by a lock
whenever it is desirable and profita
bio to slop prodnetion. This Jones
is lately in receipt of a letter from a
distinguish ed American, now sojourn
iDg abroad and patronizing [home
industries by loading bis trunk with
wearing apparel and the like pur
chased in shops upon the Parisian
boulevards. The letter islgiven out
for publication’with a flourish, and
a» was designed, goto, the great Amer
ican public to speculating upon the
purposes of its writer, Mr. Blaine.
It is u formal letter designed for
publication. I’ does not seem im
probable that a uote in more famil
iar strain accompanied it, but such a
note would undoubtedly be marked
private and confidential, and as a gen
tleman, Mr. Jones would bo con
Btraujed from giving it out. Yet,
guarded as they may be from prying
eyep, Bueh letteis will sometimes ap
pear ia public. That the accompa
uying is a true copy of the Jones
epistle marked private, we will not
undertake to say. It is presented
for what it is worth :
I think, my dear Jones, that the
inclosure, which you will know how
to disseminate, will meet the situa
tion. So discerning a friend as your
self will not miis tbe flue joints.
To commit oneself to personal ab
stinence from activity in behalf of
his own candidacy is not to compel
his friends to let up in his interest,
nor to assert that it a nomination
follow it will be declined. If sue
cess do not attend this play, it
wasn’t in the cards to win, and sue
cess under such circumstances will
have certain obvious advantages. No
ambitions rival can claim that be
did not have hi» day in tbe conven
tion. The more leaders encouraged
to try their luck, the better, for the
longer the delay, therefore, in arriv
ing at a result, fho greater tbe pros
pect that out of its muddle and de
spair, the convention, in which our
judicious friends will take care to
have seats, will acknowledge the mag
nefism of your distant friend, and,

Be vigilant, Jones, and advise me.
I shall never stoop to hint to so good
a friend as you, that a residence at
the court of St. James would be a
blessed release from the humdrum
of Pittsburg lock'-outs. Entirely be
tween ourselves, I am more willing
to sail upon the present course, be
cause if defeat must come, I would
rather that it be tbe party's than
mine. Let the responsibility L-e

The game, let us hope, is worth
the candle, but I hear far-off rumors
of entire satisfaction with the pres
ent administration And the coun
try seems slowly waking up to the
fact that while the protects have
danced the people have paid the pi
per. I think, Jones, your own tar

purchase the Pitti palace, which is
just opposite my lodgings.

Law and Order.
On Monday night all the gates on
Hill street from Col E W Hammond’s
down to the Female College were
taken from their hinges and placed
in variour out of the way places. On
yesterday the police scoured sufficient
evidence to justify them in swearing
out warrants against several high-
toned young boys just emerging iuto
manhood, who call themselves, we be
lieve, “The Kids,” and they will be
prosecuted for the misdemeanor. We
do not believe these young man
meant any harm, but it is a very fool
isb and disorderly way to have fun
by the carrying off ol other people’s
property, and the police are right in
■sing every effort to stop it. The
law and order of the town must be
preserved, no matter who suffers
for it.
It is verv annoying, doubtless, for
property owners to cotne out in the
morning and find their gates gone;
but there is another side to the ques
tion that makes the public much less
sympathetic toward the suffeters -and
that is ihe fact that people will leave
their gates open for pedestrians to
fall over on dark nights. After a
man has first had ail the wind
knocked out of him by an
open gate and has then fallen over
it and dashed iiis brains out, emotion
a! insanity could certainly be pleaded
it he broke the offending gate into
southern i s and kicked the pieces
into tin; m ddie of next week. People
who have gates should mend their
gait and keep the:r gates shut.
Ur. Stapleton report- that a sign
in his yard or Poplar street was torn
down tin; same night arid carried
away. This is a piece of mischief lor
winch there is no excuse whatever.
Don't hawk, hawk, blow, spit, and dis

To say that I like Griffin would be

off of Ilill street. From home to
office and from offico home constitutes
my perambulations. I find plenty to

Griffin is full of life a 1 business.
The stores are mclror i and are
well stocked with p « goods,
and everybody app ,iave some
thisg to do, and are in a hurry to get
it done. There is considerable capi
tal here, and il is being judiciously
invested. Railroads travei-e the
country at every point of the com

passenger train every lour enters
our city. ATew years since a large
cotton factory was erected here. At
tho close of last yeat’a operations a
diytdend of 12 per cent, was declat
ed, with orders on hand for all the
cloth pessiblc for the looms to pro

exhibit at once attracted tbe alien
tion of our capitalists, and yesterday
morning an impromptu meeting was
held by about thirty citizens, and in
less than a hour $75,000 was sub
scribed for tbe purpose of erecting
another mill, and before the dsy
closed application for a charter was
made, and Imoks opened for stock. It
is proposed to build a $325,000 mill
and to have the looms and spindles
start by the first day of 1889. And
they will do it.
