Orchard Hill Happenings.
Orchard Hill, March 21—The
season for planting corn is «t hand
and the farmers arcs busy depositing
the precious seed in the soiI. Some
of them have finished planting, while
others ure iu a rush to get through
by the last of the present week. I
think there will be a considerably
larger acreugo in corn this year than
for several years past. The farmers
in this section are beginning to find
nut that they can't afford to raise
cotton to buy their supplies. They
have been n long while in ascertain
iug this fact, though cert«in!y better
lue than never. I think the first
one to come to that conclusion in
this section was that gentleman who
was in Griffin last Tuesday laying in
his supplies. Some time about the
first of last year ho decided that he
could really save money by raising
cotton and buy his supplies and of
course planted his crop accordingly:
but ob. fata! mistake! However, ho
did plant a roasting ear patch, and
as they came iu bad a royal time for
a season; but tbo seasou was too
short. By and by the lusfious roast
in g ear gave out, as well also ns the
corti made the previous year ami of
coarse that gentleman has been lay
ing in his supplies at short intervals
•ver since that time, but I am satis
tied that he is ou the stool of repent
ance. Ho says he is like the girl
that sut ou William’s knee, he’ll
never do so any more, or like the
gentleman that paid his best girl a
visit and remained until a late hour
in lire n>gbt, during which t me
some ruthless wretch shaved his
horse's mane and tale. All these
things are bad, but such is life.

Southern Antidote for Malaria.
It is generally known that Simmons Liver
Regulator is relied upon to secure immunity
from all malarial disorders. This is proven
by its popularity, aud anyone who has lived
in the south has seen ts corutive effects and
the protection it gives ugainstthis weaken¬
ing and dangerous malady. It acts more
promptly than calomel or quinine, without
any of their injurious consequences.
Blcyclus and Tricycles.
The speed attained by the bicycles and
tricycles ou a good road is superior to
that attained by a fast trotter for the
same distance, and as a speedy mode of
conveyance is only surpassed by a locomo¬ few of
the fastest steamships and the
tive. Two riders recently rode a tricycle
20 miles 715 yards m one hour. and rode
25 miles in 75 minutes 42.8 seconds, or
at an average rate of 20.85 miles per
hour. The mechanical construction of a
bicycle is well Worth study. The requi¬
site amount of strength is probably ob¬
tained w ith a smaller proportion of
weight than in any other machine, and
considering the trying nature of the
strains, a fair amount of durability and
immunity from breakdowns is obtained.
The price, however, i<er pound (about
$;ii of the Ik -t and lightest machines is
considerably in excess of that of almost
any other machinery.—Uailroad Gazette.
Fraying for Fine Weather.
In those countries where, unlike Cali¬
fornia, they have to pray for fine weath¬
er, it needs sometimes a great deal of
faith to stick to the church. In Scotland,
for instance, one of the few really relig¬
ious countries in the world, a largo pro¬
portion of the minister's duty is to pray
for fine weather. There was a quiet
Scotch village where the farmers were
all in the dumps. The Scotch mist kept
coming down all the time, and it alter¬
nated with a frequent very heavy storm.
Tho minister had prayed every Sabbath
for fine weather without avail for four
weeks. He met an old fanner one day.
“John,” he said, “thisfearfu’ weather’s
nathing but a judgment o’ God on this
parish. YeT sick a wicked lot that tho
Lord’s jist gnun to punish ye. - ’
“’Deed, minister, we riinna tak’ the
same view * f it. We think that there’s
somethin' ti matter wi’ the minister.
Ho hat iu- a sufficient influence up
there; an" 1 i tollin' ye, minister, if ye
