Xeu Killed.
As was anticipated, yesterday
morning's mail brought in news of
damage done by the storm of Tues
day night in the northern and south
ern parts of the Stale, all hough Cen
tral Georgia eecaped almost entirely
from any serious mishap.
The only fat;.! casualty reported
was uear Lniultt City, down on the
East Tennessee road iu Telfair conn
ty, where four men were killed. W.
B. Whiddon and D V. Holland were
killed at their tuipentins woiks, aud
Joe Turner, of Virginia, anil a Mr.
Neible, of Indiana, vmo killed in the
same locality. Turpentine woiks,
houses, shanties and saw mibs were
blown down iu this locality. A nmn
ber of others were injured.
In North Georgia the storm seems
to have been most geDoral. In (Jal
houn not a single business house es
eaped, while churches were dernol
ishel and the courthouse ruined-
After the rain had passed a sevvre
bail stoim poured down, doing fur
tber damage. The storm swept over
mountains and livers from CalhouD
to London, Tenn., a distance of ono
hundred miles in about thirty min
utes, and must have left much de
structiou and loss of life in its path.
In Rome the wind blew a hurri
cane and indicted some damage,
though nothing very serious.
The African church at Hogans-
ville was destroyed, and Ixrtb the
colored churches demolished at Fair-
burn.
The wind swept over many other
points, inflicting slight damages.
IN OTHER STATES.
In East Tennessee and along the
Tennessee river the storm was as
violent as anywhere, farm houses and
barns being blown down and much
stock killed. In several instances
the inmates were cushed beneath
the houses.
In the far Northwest, dispatches
from Montano, Dakota, Minnesota,
Wisconsin and Iowa point to the
severest storm of the season, with
rain, snown and heavy ice gorges
forming.

Some Figures That Are Interesting if
Not Profitable.
From an exchange we clip the fol
lowing item as one which will be of
iuttrest to the people of Griffin, who
have so long been talking about
erecting a winter and summer re
sort betel :
Thomasville bns 1,500 visitors who
spend an average each of $3 a day
in the town—$4,500 per day, $31, *•
500 per week—$135,000 per month,
$540,000 per season of f^ur months.
Read over these figures slowly,
consider them well, remembering
that this money finds it way, through
the channels of trade, into every
man’s pocket, and then you will
more clearly understand how large
hotels pay a town. Half a million
dollars every year would help out
Griffin, and we could have it by do
ing what Thomasvillo bas done—
going to work ourselvm and erecting
a couple of fine hotels.
The fact is that wo are getting
very tired of the talk of people who
loudly acknowledge the need of a
good hotel, but whisper that it
would not pay. Five years ago
the president of our cotton factory
thought that cotton manufacturing
by steam power would not pay as
against the water power so general
ly used ; but upon investigation he
became convinced otherwise, and
the result is that today we have one
of the neatest and be8 f , paying mills
in the South, and another one to
go up in a few months.
Running a hotel in Griffin, like
aDy other business, will pay with
good management and pay well. It
would certainly pay the people of
Griffin, and they would woik for
their interests in seeing that it paid
the landlord. Instead of one brief
season, a resort hotel here would
have two seasons—winter for North
