A LONG TRIP TO WASHINGTON.
How Representative Holman’* HHnd
('ouslltuent Came After His
Pension.
From the Wash!ngtou Post.
Representative Holman, of Indi¬
ana, devoted himself yesterday to
looking after the interests of a cour
ages constituent whose name is
Thomas Akra, and who lives iu Os¬
good, Ripple county, in the Hoosier
State. About six weeks ago Akra.
who is an old blind man over sixty
years of age fell in with a family of
immigrants, who having moved out
from Indiana to Missouri some years
ago. had turned their faces eastward
in search of betteh luck. There
were seven persons in the family—a
father sixty years of age, a mother and
five chil Iren, the oldest a yonng
man. The outfit consisted of a
horse and wagon, some provisions
and a little money. They had reached
Osgood, and were encamped near
the little town, when in some man¬
ner they met Akra. Ho became in¬
terested in their plans, and when
they mentioned that they thought
they would eventually pass through
Washington, he suggested that he be
allowed to join the party. “You
see,” he said, “1 nave been waiting
thirteen yaars for the government ro
grant roe’ a pension, and I think it is
almost time to look after the matter
| | myself.” roadside V family aid counsel tbe was held of
by the company
the blind man was accepted. Guce
more the party began its tedious
journey, and yesterday morning they
reached Washington after spending
six weeks on tbe road. They were
three weeks crossing the Allegheny
Mountains, and sufferred intensely
during the blizzrrd. Once tbe wind
blew their wagon over s^n‘4 n
was "broken. The accklent happened
! a lonely, God-for-saken country
but the two old men, the woman and
the grown up children harnessed
themsidves to the broken down vehi
clo and dragged it over a mountain
road fifteen miles to the nearest
smithy. At night the entire party
blepi under the wagon, and during
the dry they bought provisions and
cooked them when they camped.
Upon arriving here the Missouri
man led 1 .s blind companion to the
capitoi,found Representative Holman
and told hi in their story. The sym¬
pathy of the Congressman was at
once enlisted, and yesterday he drove
his constitm . - to'he Pension Office.
A glance at the records revealed a
cut ious fact. Four years ago a let
ter was sent to Akra, ditectmg him
logo to Lawrenceburg, Ind., an(J
appear before an examining board in
order that his claim might be passed
upon, the question at issue being
whether or not his blindness was the
result of service in the war. This
letter Akra says ho never received,
although, as ho remarked io-daj‘“l
have been wondering wba! was the
trouble.” The pension ‘ officials .....

the very grittiest man I ever saw,
and we ain’t going to part til! he gets
back home again.” Then the blind
