FARM AND GARDEN.
TIMELY TOPICS CONSIDERED IN A
PRACTICAL MANNER.
Retirements <>r the Cubbnge Plant— Naees-
ally lor its Rapid Growth—Varieties
That Have Giiinnl IVbie.preail Popu-
| lar 17 Among Gardeners and Consumers.
| The cabbage requires u deep, rich soil
j and thorough working. Some of the largo
! late varieties scorn to do best If the seod
is sown in the hills where they are to
remain, and in that case sow two or three
seeds where each plant is desired and then
pull up all but the strongest Plant the
large varieties three feet apart; the small
early sorts, from a foot to eighteen Inches.
The Savoy cabbages have wrinkled leaves
and are of fine flavor, especially after a
little frost has touched them In the
autumn.
Insects have been exceedingly trouble
some to cabbage in many sections of late
years, and growers aro obliged to try for
a rapid growth and wage a constant war-
faro agalust the enemy.
JERSEY EARLY WAKEFIELD.
In the cuts are shown two popular va¬
rieties. Tho first of these, the Jersey
Early Wakefield, is a great favorite with
market gardeners for the New York mar¬
ket, being the earliest, sure to head and
true to seed. The second, Louisville
Drumhead, is a variety grown largely by
market gardeners in the southwest. It
stands hot weather better than most other
sorts, and is a sure cropper and resembles
Premium "Flat Dutch.
wm i|
LOUISVILLE DRUM HEAD.
Among new and superior varieties is
the All Seasons. It is very sure heading,
of excellent quality and may be planted
earl or late, as it forms large and very
solid heads quickly.
Sweet Potatoes._____
The sweet potato is extremely sensitive
to frost and, except in the south, its sea
son hot must No be prolonged other by means of t»|F
bed. plan than sprouting
and setting the plants is now thought of
by experienced growers. It succeeds well
on nearly any soil that can be easily
drained, but not on a wet one of any de¬
scription. Alluvial and peaty soils are
not adapted to it.
The Southern Queen is the earliest of all
sweet potatoes; the root is very largo and
longer than the Nansemond, of light
color, with excellent keeping qualities
The Hanover, or improved Nansemond
variety, is a favorite in Virginia, and the
yollow Nansemond is preferred by many
to all other kinds.
Artificial Manures.
Results obtained with artificial fertili
zers and especially with what aro known
as “complete manures,” aro often sur
prising iu potato culture and truck gar
dening Potatoes grown with the use of
commercial fertilizers are less liablo to
disease, and tho quality of vegetables In
many instances is improved. Quality
seems to*be largely dependent upon the
rapidity and healthfuluess of growth, and
a slow acting manure will most surely
produce inferior vegetables, lacking flavor
Peas, beaus, radishes, carrots, etc., grown
thereon aro tough and flavorless, and
likewise many fruits Tho tenderness
of beets, carrots, etc., depends on quick
growth. Asparagus from soil rich in
soluble food is full flavored, teuder and
luscious to tho very tips.
Kubanka Wheat.
The much talked of Kubanka wheat,
raised in the neighborhood of Winnipeg,
has been badly sat upon by the Canadian
boards of trade. They say it is only
“goose or rice wheat,” and not worth to
them within twenty-five cents a bushel of
good red fife. The Russian grown Ku¬
banka is a valuable mixing wheat on the
Mark Lane market, and there may be a
mistake somewhere.
Agricultural Notes.
Reports from various locations make it
appear that tho several forms of wire
fencing withstood the blizzards of the
past season better than any other sort.
Post and nail, and the lighter board fences
suffered most.
Arbor day is being observed in many of
the states. It is a good institution.
Hot milk in the morning will benefit the
little chicks.

Ventilation of the Capitol.
Mr. Edward Clark, the architect; of tho
Capitol for some years, and who, I be¬
lieve, is a New England man, lias done
wonders in heating mi l ventilating the
building, which lmd i .it the smallest per¬
foration for either i, at or ventilation,
according to the modern plan. Great
fans in tho cellar pump up many thou¬
sand cubic feet of air into the house and
senate chain tiers. A network of pipes
conveys heat where heat was never
meant to be. The only provision made
for heating tlio building was big open
fireplaces: and to this day in tho corridors
may be seen the long, high wooden boxes
in which the oak and hickory logs were
kept that blazed up tbe chimneys in
days of the fathers. There are yet many
vast fireplaces at the Capitol in which a
generous wood fire glows and-sparkles—
none of your little piles of kindling wood,
but old time back logs, supported on
large firedogs of three generations back.
The committee rooms all have open fires,
either of coal or wood, as the chairman
of the committee selects.—Washington
