Tbe Farmer ar.d the Tariff.
CoDgre-ssman Stewart of Georgia,
in his speech in tfcehoase on VVedoes
day. brought the tariff question liter
ally Lome to the farmers of the conn
try in a for;' that will command
their alien'd the first place, and
that cannot 1 make it both clear
and interest ng them in the sec
ond place.
From calculations made by him
seif, based on the current expenses
of an average family of six persons
living on a farm, Mr. Stewart show
ed that such family are taxed by the
present tariff duties $136 a year, in
addition to all other taxes that they
have to pay, and of course upon
their expenditures for the ordinary
comforts and the necessaries of life.
The Mills biff, if it becomes a law,
will reduce the burden by $36, with
out touching the duties on many ar
tides of luxury or interfering with
any industry. Every farmer ia the
country is therefore interested in the
passage of this bill in so far as be ia
interested ; n avoiding the payment
of nearly $100 annually iu tho form
of a tax from which he derives no
benefit whatever in return, and which
goes as a bonus into the pockets of
men who do not lift a band to earn a
dollar of that amount.
No amount of argument or misrep
resentation, or pleading for free
whisky and free tobacco, can obscure
the feiugie point that Mr. Stewart
has presented sharply and directly
to the minds of the farmers of the
United States. They cannot fail to
see what their past indifferences to
the tariff question has cost them al
ready, and where their present and
future interest lies. The passage of
the .Mills bill means to each one of
them a saving of $06 a year. Each
can decide for himself whether that
sum is worth saving.
There have been much longer
speech:; on thejtaiiff delivered ia this
session of congress than that of Mr,
S;ewarf, but none, perhaps, has pre
seated the farmers’ case moro terse
]y or more convincingly than his.
The facts and figures he dealt with
are precisely tho&o which every farm
er should have placed before him and
kept before him. ar.d we shall take
pit ure iu presenting them more in
detail when the full report of bis
j speech is received, [Charleston

has been a laborious and costly work,
but the end justifies the effort. Obstrnc

They must be cleared away, or physical
