Whj Delegate Voeriiees Will Not Speak
On the Mills BUI.
Washington, Maj 17.— Delegate
Charlie Vaorhees, of Washington
Territory, was asked to day by your
correspondent if he intended to raaka
a speech on the tariff during the de
bate which is now on.
“Not much,” was the reply. “I
am too smart for that. On the tariff
I am smarter than a Philadelphia
lawyer. Washington Territory is
a very big tract of land. In tbe east
and west all of the voters are tariff
reformers. In the north and south
they are protectionists, J want to
be a member of the next House.”
“That reminds me,” said Repre
sentative Mason, of Illinois, who
was present, “of an old and very
practical politician in my State. His
■ame is Elijah J. Haynes. He has
requentty been a member of the
State Legislature. During one of
his campaigns he had a good deal of
Opposition. He worked the churches.
He took a pew in a Catholic church,
made a generous contribution to the
Episcopal church, and, in short,
neglected no denomination. When
this became knowu some of the
church members spoke to him about
it. It was not entirely satisfactory
to them. They told him that he was
reported to be a Universalist and
many other things. They wanted to
know what he really thought as to
tbe hereafter. Haynes protested
against this. He said: ‘You ought
not to spring tbe question of heaven
and hell on me right in the m>dst of
a hot campaign! You see T hate
friends in both places.” ’

THE BROOM FACTORY.
It it in Operation and Turning Out
- i Handsome Work.
if
The new broom factory of Bishop
Sc Smyth is now in operation at the
old Rialto aud turning out very
handsome goods. They have re
oeived a carload of stock and are ne
gotiating for more, which will soon
bo turned into brooms. They make
all grades aud sizes, all of the best
quality. The operation is very in
teresting to watch, and a News re
presentativc yesterday evening car
ried out a beautiful office broom
that had been made before his eyes
in a few minutes.
The proprietors have wisely start
ed on a small scale, waiting to work
up the trade and bnsiuess. Mr.
Smyth is the only skilled operative at
present, though they expect to pat
□lore in sood. He can turn out four
dozen brooms in a day himself, or
eight dozen with some one to stitch.
The first sale was made to the
enterprising firm of W. M. Holman
& Co. where purchasers can call and
examine.
