W ben a jilstto t is ja-rturiw.’ii strum otltcr
heavenly body is surely pulling it, which
explains tho eccentricity of the earth’s
orbit and also Lite curious vioyag motion
of the star Sirius. Some great body is
pulling it, and that body was discovered
by Alvin Clark’s great telescope. The
strangest that discovery of the spectroscope
was it could tell whether a star is
approaching the earth or retreating from
it. It was found fifteen years ago that
Sirius was departing at" the rate of
twenty-nine miles a second. This late
kept diminishing, and now the star is ap¬
proaching at the rate of twenty-one miles
a second. The only hypothesis tenable is
that this planet discovered by Alvin
Clark’s telescope is large in size, but low
in temperature, and that Sirius ip really
a double star. In fact, the two^lars are
actually waltzing with each other in
space, making a curious zigzag move¬
ment through their influence of each
other. That is the latestdiscovery ol tho
curious results of motion.—Dr. S. Ii.

Supeintit tons «f the Pueblo*.
The Pueblos—commonly called In¬
dians, but really descendants of the an¬
cient Aztecs—have numerous supersti¬
tions. Tho eagle is a sacred bird with
them—tho winged throne of their em¬
peror god, Montezuma, for whose prom¬
ised second advent they still patiently
wait. In any of the Pueblo cities you
will find the great dark eagles, i ithcr
tethered upon the house to; is or penned in
little corrals of cedar, and religiously
tended. The Pueblo hunter always has
marvelous luck, if he carries wiih liim a
tiny stone image of a coyote with a tiuv
arrowhead lashed to its side. Though
nominally converted to Catholicism, the
Pueblos are still secret but ardent fire
worshipers. The snake, too, is sacred to
them, and you will find its symbolic coils

Miss Alcott to Young Authors.
Each must work in his own way, and
the only drill needed is to keep writing
and profit by criticism. Mind grammar,
spelling and punctuation, use short
words and express as briefly as you can
your meaning. Young people use too
many adjectives and try to “write fine. “
The strongest, simplest words are bcsi.
and no foreign ones if it can beluij-.d
Write and print if you can; if not, still
write and improve as you go on. Read
the best books and they will improve
your style. See and hear good speakers
and wise people, and learn of them.—

The Empress’ Coronation I r.
The empress of Russia has sent her
coronation dress to the national museum.
The mantle was literally cloth of gold,
for it was a very supple gold tissue, with
the heraldic eagle of the Romanoffs ap-
pliqued in black silk. On the heart of
the bird was tiio arms of Moscow, the
sacred city; on the wings those of the
kingdoms over which the czar reigns and
of the duchv of Finland. The train of
the dress was also of gold tissue, richly
embroidered, and the combined weight
of so much metallic thread as was used
in tlie dress and mantlo caused great
fatigue to the illustrious wearer. — Boston

find the flow of their contents interfered
