The l r.,f<**»lona.l Homori t'i Work.
The task of a man who is compelled to
get up a certain amount of pointed humor
daily is more laborious than that of a
hod carrier. It is*something like it, too.
He just carries stuff to the level of the
average comprehension, and having de¬
posited it before tho person to get the
benefit of it, goes after more. How does
the humorist work? Well, it depends
largely upon- !:?« ' ipe-rament, and
greater or less for his specialty.
Some men, altlm . 0 ,ey may have fair
ability in some lines of writing, are slow
to originate a humorous idea, notwith¬
standing that they can appreciate it in
others. To such, the writing of a humor¬
ous paragraph or article is something to
be dreaded. It would be a violation at
newspaper ethics for a professional w riter
to decline to get up an article on any
subject or from nny standpoint. Given
a theme and t ; o treat it humorously,
the most seda . mber of a newspaper
stall will atti . .t without hesitation,
and, in lsia own ; .:ne, will do the work
well, p-erhaps a3 well as the man whose
specialty is humor.
But, ah, the labor of the sedate man!
How each queer simile, every epigram¬
matic will wring sentence lii3 and soul every and make odd expression lua brain
throb! Fun! Tell him tliat he ought to
enjoy his own fun, and he will probably
brain you with tlie office poker. Ask the
regular paragrapher whether he enjoys
hia work, and he will think you a fool.
He does it because it is bis work, but the
terrible wrestle he has with the English
language every day to evolve those
atrocious witticisms of his, no one knows
but himself. To the young man who
thinks of going into newspaper work as
a funny man, there is only one word of
advice to be given, and that, by the way, of
was used Ly the most dismal humorist
the present century, London Punch:
“Don’t!”—Pittsburg Bulletin.
(tardiness of American Half Breeds*
The experience of the teachers of the
Lincoin institution confirms the views
here expressed, that the mixed Indian is
more exempt from pulmonary
than tho pure Indian; and, further,
if the former are attacked by disease,
they offer greater constitutional resist¬
ance to it than the latter. Tills view is
also confirmed by the largo experience
of Capt. R. II. Pratt, superintendent of
the Carlisle Indian school, who says in
his last report: “Our experience is that
the mixed bloods resist disease and death
from pulmonary troubles better than tho
full bloods; and our best health condi¬
tions are found among those we send out
into families—due, I think, veiy largely
to the regular occupation and varied
diet.”
Similar views have been expressed by
others who have resided among the
mixed or half breed races in the north¬
western part of Canada. These people
are said to l>o strong and hearty, long
lived, and not subject to disease, so long
as they remain in their native climate.
They regard themselves as the equal of
the whites, and look in a patronizing
way on the Indian. Their families are
usually very largo, and the female sex is
said to be very liandsome. Quite re¬
cently I had occasion to investigate the
question whether pulmonary consump¬
tion tends to exterminate the American
Indian, and I then found that nearly all
those Indian agencies which show the
lowest consumption rate are precisely
those which are shown in tho table of
this paper to contain the largest number
of mixed bloods.—Thomas J. Mays, M.
D , in Popular Science Monthly.
