It would be supposed, very natur¬
ally, that those two great inventions,
“the Jenney car coupler” and “the
Westinghouse air brake," which con¬
tribute so much to toe safety of rail¬
road employes and persons who
travel on railroads, were so well
known that the sale of them would
not be promoted by advertising.
Such does not appear to be the case,
however, because those who control
the patents on them are very
advertisers. In ail the mechanical
and railway trade journals there
large advertisements in which
benefits to be derived from the
ventions are pointed oat. The few
companies which control toe
have made million* of dollars out
them, and have no competitors, yet
they recognize the necessity tor adver¬
tising.
The policy of these companies
this matter teaches a lesson which
many business men, who think that
their business k so well known
advertising would be of no advan¬
tage to them, might study with great
benefit. There is no business
advertising will not help, and the
larger the business is the greater the
assistance liberal judicious adver¬
tising will render it. There are men
in Savannah owning large businerees
ol one kind and another who do not
advertise because they say they do
not believe that advertising would
benefit them. They are mistaken,
and they can convince themselves
that they are by glvingadvertisinga
trial. If every kind of business in
Savannah were advertised not only
would all kinds of business be more
prosperous, but the city also would
be greatly bene fitted, The impres¬
sion would get abroad that Savan¬
nah was a very lively and growing
town, and the result would beagreat
increase in her business and a more
rapid growth of her population.
A few days ago the Morning News
received an inquiry from Florida. A
party in that State desired to know
whether there was any one in Savan¬
nah engaged in a certain kind of bus¬
iness, There are several persons en¬
gaged in the business in question,
bat not one of them is an advertiser.
There are good openings in Savan¬
nah for young and enterprising bus¬
iness men. In order to succeed they
need only good business qualifies-
tions. to he industrious, and to ad¬
vertise liberally Them are fortunes
awaiting those who adopt the plan
of advert ising freely and bo ldly.
