The whole world seems to I* mat*
iog a great advance movement in
every line of industry. No one ran
study the signs of the times without
bring impressed with this fact, and
without realizing th»t we are enter¬
ing upon a period which gives prom¬
ise of greater and more wide-reaching
movements in the world's commercial
and manufacturing interests than
has ever l>cen seen before. It is not
in this country alone that there is
almost unprecedented activity in
business interests. The workshops
Europe are crowded, and many of
the long-idle plants of Great Britain
are running night and day to meet
the demand for iron and steel-
And wherever we look there are indi
cations of development and ad¬
vancement and of gigantic enter¬
prises that, are destined to change
many of the currents of the world’s
commerce. In’this country we see
almost every furnace that can ever
blow in, actively' at work, while roll¬
ing mills, steel rail mills and kindred
enterprises are all equally as busy,
and yet the consumptive demands
are gradually gaining on production
and causing a decrease of stocks on
hand. Great enterprises, from the
building of the Nicurauguan canal;
the construction of new railroads
into rich mineral sections, the devel¬
opment of which means almost as
great u revolution in steel making
as the development of Alabama’s
iron interests made in iron produc¬
tion; the building of new ports on
the Gulf that will turn the traffic of
the rich and populous West from its
present channels and pour a vast
business, scarcely dreamed of now,
through these new Southern ports;
the great activity in iron and steel
ship-building, fully taxing to its ut
most every ship yard in the country;
the certainty of closer commercial
relations—and consequently a larger
share of their trade—with the rich
eountries of Central and ,South Am¬
erica, are some of the movements
that are now muking themselves felt
in all the varied ramifications of the
business interests of this country.
Just at this period, which is to mark
a distinctive era in the history of
human race—an eia of advancement
and progress for the peoples of all
nations—the South is the center
attraction. It has demonstrated
that it has the advantages
to make it the center of iron
steel production of the whole
and “that nation or that section
any nation which possesses
acy' in the production of iron
steel, and in their conversion to
forms for use, will dominate and
trol the commerce of the world;"

York Star, says:
Henry Richardson, editor of the
Macon, Ga., Telegraph, was in New
York a day or two since. He is en¬
joying his first vacation since he as¬
sumed the editorial management of
that paper, about three years ago.
Mr. Richardson is one of the Iwsst
known journalists of the South. For
a number of years he was on the edi¬
torial staff of the Atlanta Constitu¬
tion, and represented that paper at
Washington during several sessions
o! congress. He is a comparatively
young man, with a round, smooth,
boyish fare. When James Campbell
bought out the Macon paper he had
a consultation with Henry Grady as
to the best equipped man he knew to
direct the editorial policy. Mr. Rich¬
ardson was in an adjoining room,
and was called iu, and this was Gra¬
dy’s recommendation: “Mr. C’amp-
bell. this is the man you are looking
for." Contracts were signed the next
day, and within a week Mr. Richard¬
son was in Macon.
