_____i wave has extended.
That New York, always solidly
Democratic on a fair and unbiased
OTpr—atlnn. would remain so was ex-
I,
fc Mahone would be defeated if
_.flMghterad in VffginJa could oot
be doubtod by any one who truly un-
dmtood the spirit of the South.
lfe» ta»y, Mar,bind J and Miaala-
ataman built that way.
No especial significance, therefore,
can he attached I to the results in any
of theabove States.
Bnt that Ohio shonld elect a Dem¬
ocratic governor and legislature was
believed only by the sanguine, and
even they had no firm faith of defeat¬

If any one had asserted that Iowa
would elect a Democratic governor in
the first year of the Harrison ad min¬
istration, his friend, would have re¬
garded him as one hopelessly insane
and totally without reason.
Yet these two revolutions appear
tohaveeome to pass in one cool
November day.
There must have been some special
cause for these unexpected results
and in looking for it, it is found in
the latest dispatch from Cincinnati
to tbs Atlanta Constitution on No¬
vember 5th, which says: “A sigkifi-
cant fact in connection with the re¬
turns so far is the uniform Democrat¬
ic gains in the mining regions, where
the tariff question was made an
issue” The Constitution is a high
protection paper, yet the small eapi
tats are its own—showing that its
telegraph editor has good sense, if
its editorial writers do have fits.
All over Ohio the tariff question
was made an issue, but it naturally
struck the laboring classes first and
hardest, who have failed to find the
full dinner pails which Harrison
promised them. .So in Iowa, it was
the fight o! the tariff reformers and
farmers against monopoly, which
was personated in the Republican
candidate.
The campaign of education, which
made only green freshmen in 1888,
is now to the sophomore year and
some nice prises are being distributed
to proflefent scholars. In I 1892 boo
|
when all the people become past
masters in true political economy,
there wBl be nothing left of the high
tariff school.
Tariff reform will sweep the conn-
try to 1892.
And the man who most boldly ad¬
vocated tariff reform in 1888, will be
at the sweeping

the difficulties in the way of a thor¬

insurmountable. But if a practical

a revolution in southern agricultural
conditions.
W# are awaiting more definite re¬

been nothing so far to indicate that
this Republican stronghold has gone
Democratic, bnt then there is no rea¬
