POWELL SHOOTS PETER.
Serious Shooting Affray at Newnan,
Over Fifteen tents.
Newnan, Ga., Nov. 18.—This city
was thrown into a flatter of excite¬
ment at 4:80 o’clock Saturday after¬
noon by the report of three pistol
shots in rapid succession at the
jewelry store of W. E. Avery, next
door to the postofllce. On inquiry
it was learned that Mr. J. D. Powell,
a young farmer living north of the
city, had shot Carl Peter, a clerk in
Avery’s, store, the ball entering his
right side, one and a half inches be¬
low the nipple and lodging near the
surface on his back. Whether the
ball struck a rib and made a circuit
or went directly through his body
is not known. He experiences much
difficulty in breathing, and it is
thought by some that the wound is
serious and he may not recover.
While Dr. Moore, liis physician, thinks
the wound serious, it is not necessari¬
ly fatal.
Itjseems that the difficulty arose
over a very trifling matter, and is an¬
other argument that the hip-
pocket pistol is a menace to the
peace and dignity of every communi¬
ty-
At noon Mr. Powell called to get
some morphine needles cleansed, and
insisted on, their being cleaned at
once. They were repaired about 2
and he called for them about 4:30,
when he and Peter had some hot
words over the price, which was only
15 cents. Powell got the needles and
went out, followed by Peter, after
which they returned and continued
their wrangle.
Finally Peter said: “I am getting
tired of your monkeying, and if you
don’tstop I willblowyour head off.”
Powell called him a liar and other
exasperating epithets, when sudden¬
ly Peter fired his pistol at his head,
the ball passing near his ear. Powell
at once drew his pistol with the re¬
sults mentioned.
Peter came here a few months ago
from Henderson, Ky., where he is
well connected, and his deportment
here has been good.
Powell belongs to one of the oldest
and most influential families in the
county and the difficulty is greatly
deplored by the friends of both par¬
ties.

President Harrison can hardly re¬
view the returns with complacency.
Democratic success in so many quar¬
ters cannot indicate to him that his
Administration is as acceptable as
he would like to have. He can get
no such crumbs of comfort out of the
returns this year. One would sup¬
pose the success in 1888 would have
been enough to inspire Kepublieans
everywhere to redoubled effort to
keep the ball rolling, and accomplish
still more'this year. Instead of re¬
newed activity there was apathy, or
else a good many who voted for
Harrison believed they ma«fe a mis¬
take which they were anxious to rec¬
tify. The latter is not a very satis¬
factory view to take of it.

THE T0URI8TS ARE COMING.
A Transportation Man Hives Seven
Reasons Why He Know* It.
“Here are reason* why Northern
people are coming to Florida this
winter,” remarked a well posted Cen¬
tral railroad man the other day. “I
know what 1 am talking about, for
I have studied the subject thor¬
oughly. I have seven good reasons,
and here they are:
1. All tourists points in the North
say they have more inquiries for tick¬
ets to Florida than any previous
year.
2. The railroads are making better
rates to Florida from more points
than ever before, and they ore run¬
ning more sleepers.
8. Thereismorecoinpetitionamong
railroads, as many new ones have
been built in the last year.
4. That the bottom has dropped
out of the California boom, and that
reports from there show that there is
positively little if any travel.
5. That the railroads are making
special efforts to divert travel from
the West to Florida and the South
generally.
6. The tourists did not come to
Florida last year, and a* the state has
been remarkably healthy this sum¬
mer, they will flock there in thous¬
ands, for the “leisure class” of Amer¬
ica have seen Europe, and have no¬
where else to go than Florida and
the South.
7. That itis thepopular fad now to
go to Florida among the wealthy
classes.
If Griffin had that long talked of
hotel, we would be prepared to reap
a golden harvest from this crowd
both going and coming.
There tsno more Iruitlul source ot disease

To Kickers, Wherever They May Be.
This poem was written and dedicat¬
ed to those people who are “opposed
to a mighty sight more than they
are in favor of.”
St, Peter ; stands by the heavenly
gates, his hands on the string of a
tiently lyre, and sings a loud the souls song ashe pa¬
waits for of those
who expire.
He hears in the distance the chorus
of song that swells from the foot of
the heavenly throne, and smiles as
the music is wafted along, and war¬
bles a lav of his own. “There is
room in this region for millions of
souls, who by sorrow and woe were
bereft; ’tis for those who have suffer¬
ed the melody rolls, but the kickers
must turn to the left!
There is room for the people who,
when they were young persisted in
sowing wild oats, yet who boomed
up their town with sinew and tongue,
but the kickers must go with the
goats I There is room for the people
who pointed with pride to the beauty
and growth of their town, who kept
singing but its the praises kickers aloud will ’til they
died, please am¬
ble down!
“They’d say that the music was all
out of tune, and the angelic robes
‘hand-me-downs,’ and they’d send
for a jeweler off to the moon to sam¬
ple the gold in their crowns. 8o
while there is room for a million of
souls, who by sorrow and woe were
bereft, we want no complaint the of the
music that rolls, so kickers must
turn to the left!”
